[Mk2] [Turbo] MR2 REV1 TURBO running issue

Post by willbutler1 »

Hi

I have left my MR2 in the garage for a while (about a year) and recently looked to get in MOT'd with a view to selling it.

The problem I have is the car starts fine, warms up fine but if you try to accelerate or increase the revs above around 5000 it just doesn't rev and if you rev the engine quickly you can hear the turbo try to spin and it runs really rough. when driving it the car bucks and shakes and is very unhappy. I put some fresh fuel in it and changed the fuel filter and still no change. It runs absolutely fine as long as you don't increase the revs or try to apply any boost.

It did do this to me about a year ago but after a short drive it sorted its self out and ran fine, just wondering if anyone has any ideas for to try, my next move was to try another Oxygen sensor and another water temp sensor.

The car is stock with no modifications so any advice would be great, in hindsight I should have checked and waited till I knew it was running properly, I really can sell this car to someone with it behaving how it is at the moment

Many thanks

Will

Hi thomp1983

Thanks for that i have taken off the distributor cap and inside its its quite caked up on some of the points and also one of sockets that the HT lead plugs into was corroded. I have also removed the spark plugs, these dont look happy. All the plugs are rather black and I think that the gaps are a bit big.

All this combined could this cause my issue? I assume they all (including the ht leads) will need replacing?

regards
Will

A corroded dizzy cap can certainly cause issues. Also remove and check the ignition coil, the outer case can crack and moisture gets in causing issues.

Overall it just sounds like the car is in need of a decent service

Thank you all for your help I really appreciate it. I cleaned everything up, new set of plugs and also cleaned the MAF sensor, and now it runs perfectly, so well I almost don't want to sell it now!!

Anyway again really appreciate the advice.

Kind regards
Will.
