Dose of paint stripper wouldn't hurt. Maybe the engine is having some sort of fit due to the marvel comics paint scheme imposed on it.

Agreed. If it gets fixed, that's on the list. Priorities n all....

Thankfully the only DIY paint addition on the car.

This that Internet bullsh!t going on by chance? The manifolds are cast, how the hell can they warp? I guess a straight edge will show that?

Rev3 manifolds do warp, mine was way out of spec but didn't blow probably due to the multi layered metal gasket.

Interesting...

Its a Rev 2 engine but I guess the casting process is the same anyway.

New turbo on way, got for a reasonable price.

Called Toyota, the B@stards want £59 for 9 studs and 9 K Nuts.....!!!!!!!

Rediculous.

Then i need

Exhaust Manifold to Head Gasket
Water Line Gasket
Turbo to Manifold Gasket
turbo to decat Gasket.

Anyone used any cheaper aftermarket ones they can recommend as not leaky?

Hopefully turbo & header will be out tonight.

Exhaust manifold has no clear leaks, but only 3 studs on top, 2 of which have 2 or 3 washers on the studs... wtf.....

Either buy some exhaust studs off eBay or buy and cut some studding there's nothing unusual about them.

Manifold and turbo gaskets any that are metal will be fine, the water line will no doubt be fine with rtv sealant.

Your current gaskets are probably reusable metal gaskets normally are, especially if they use copper crush sections as they can be reheated with a blow torch.

Once you've got the manifold off check both the head face and the manifold for warping, they may be fine not everyone is capable of assembling an engine and they may just of made a mess of it.

Good news and bad news....

Got it all off tonight, variety of different studs and all sorts used.

The head to manifold gasket however was stuck on something....... it was the thread inside the stud hole coming out

Are holes helicoiled by default from the factory on these blocks? Wondering if it was a repair he previously did or just the thread ruined by over torquing.

Anyway the thread pulled out like spaghetti so hoping a new helicoil thread will just screw right in. If not, I'll helicoil it out (deep breath).

Good news! Could clearly see where the manifold may have been leaking - bottom right corner (OK stud).

Anyway whole set of new studs and nuts will go on when I'm happy every seat is perfect.

The threads pulling out isn't unusual, a timesert is a better fix than a helicoil in this situation

Argh fu@k. Good find Craig

OK serious decision time - would you / should I stop right now, cut my losses and move on?

With the head that skimmed is it likely to cause problems further down the line? To me it looks OK. Slightly raised compression I guess (very slightly)

how much does it owe you? what's it worth running and back together? Vs what would you get for it as it is and can you be bothered with the hassle..

personally I'd probably put it back together, hope the noise was a blowing exhaust manifold gasket and flog it to try and recoup your expenses.

Problem is if it isn't, then I'm another 120 down. If it is, then cool

Such a shame as the bodywork is in such good condition and it's almost rust free. Think I'll be breaking it for parts to recoup then as that's the less risky option for me. What a shame.
