Got the car part mapped this morning. Unfortunately the IACV packed up on the dyno which put an end to the day, that must have been the cause of my odd rich/lean swing and stumbling/misfire feel the other day. Annoying but not a major issue

Anyway we got the afr's dialled in today, boost controller set at 1.2 bar max and a nice gentle boost curve instead of slamming it all in straight away to protect the engine.

I need to fix the IACV, go back and then put some ignition into it, Jamie said it's nowhere near det and we can probably put 3/4 degrees of timing into it safely.

There were some stunning evos there today, I definitely haven't been looking at Evo 7 prices already.. Honest :/

That's a shame mate.

Any power figures?

4wd is boring but satisfying in the bends having no worries about sideways action. My Impreza handles amazing but I still prefer the mr2! My mate had an Evo 8 260 got it mapped and it was 360 /350 and it was awesome!

309bhp@ 0.8bar / 330bhp @ 1.2 bar at the moment, there's a bit more in it once we get some timing into it, Jamie (dyno operator/owner of evotune) said the turbo is only just waking up @1.2 bar and with a set of Pistons in it and some more boost it'll easily do 400+

Afraid not mate, I didn't even take any pictures.. Was too distracted with other things. Hopefully all will go to plan next time I'm there and I'll get some

It comes on boost at about 3250 rpm, wastegate pressure (0.8 bar) by 4K then my boost curve has been set to rise gradually to peak power. Obviously if you wanted to you could bring it in a lot quicker than that with the boost controller, but the stock Pistons may not like that very much.

Car is back in bits in the garage. Idle control valve confirmed casualty. Sheppy reckons he's got one I can have which is awesome, hopefully I can get one sorted by next weekend or else it won't be going to beaulieu.

I know it's a minor issue but I'm really pi$$ed off with the car today. I was supposed to be driving it to watch round 3 of the BDC tomorrow which obviously isn't happening now. Maybe I'm being melodramatic but I don't know where we go from here... I want(ed) 350bhp as a high boost setting, if I don't get somewhere near it when I go back to the rollers I'll feel a little like I've wasted a lot of time, effort and money for not a lot of results.

Do I really want to spend another ~£2k and have it off the road for ages again to build a forged bottom end? At this point in time I don't know :/

Chin up rob, get the icv sorted and mapping finished, drive the thing then worry about where to go next. As it's a weekend car you may find you can live with 330-340hp it's not that far off your original target

Sounds like a healthy engine you've got- those are decent figures you've got.

At least it was only something minor like an idle valve that let go on you...this will be a fun car once you've got it dialed in :thumleft:

And even more fun when you stick a set of forgies in.......

Build another bottom end off the car Rob. All you need is the block, pistons and rods really. Then when you do want to shoot for 400+ it's just a few days work swapping the blocks. I'll give you a shout on facebook as I may be able to help you out with a few things.

How is the ride with the HSD monopro's? what springs did you get with them as i've read that they can be a little harsh for road use.

Not sure if I really need them given I have the OE bilstein shocks fitted but then at 20 years old they could probably do with replacing. Failing that i've got some sea pay burning a hole in my pocket .

I think I am just going to enjoy it as it is for the time being, and collect the parts to build a forged motor for it over time, I definitely don't want the down time of taking the current motor out and rebuilding that.

@lee, the HSD's are really good, I've got the 6/10kg springs and the dampers set to 6/16, the ride is firm but compliant. Definitely not crashy/bouncy/harsh.. I'd have no problems with the ride quality of it if it was a daily. :thumleft:

Awesome, given the state of British roads compared to Aus they would be fine as a daily then!

Issues aside that's some good figures :thumleft:

Not going for 350 is no bad thing , keep it reliable while you get the parts together for a build.

new (used) idle control valve now waiting for me at home.. my mrs absolutely loves unpacking dirty car parts and sending me pictures of them while I'm away at work

can't wait to get back home on friday and get it fitted.. beaulieu still on the cards, looks like cinderella will be going to the ball as long as it doesn't spit it's dummy out on the drive down.

looks like I've bought an AEM W/M kit from Ashley too, which should give me a bit more head room to make power safely on stock internals for the time being, hopefully I can get it fitted before I go back to the rollers.

I've been tentatively making a shopping list for a forged bottom end too.. I'm not sure how far I want to go with it.. my sensible head is saying a basic refresh (i.e all new toyota gaskets, oil & water pump, ACL bearings etc etc) with the addition of a set of wossner 8:1 pistons and ARP rod bolts.

It would be nice to go a bit further and do forged rods, ARP mains, head studs and maybe a set of cams but I'm not sure it's really required for what I want and it's a fairly decent difference in price..

I went through the exact same thought process! I landed on the "if I've got it all open I may as well" approach and am doing rods, all bearings but leaving head standard (for now). I opted for 86.5mm Wossner's so that I could be sure clearances would be within spec to the pistons, partnered with PEC rods and ARP fasteners. ACL are becoming much harder to get now, so I went with King race bearings.

Give Usman at IDWorkz a call for the pistons etc - he came up trumps for me price-wise.

any reason you went for 86.5 instead of 86.25 wossners?

I have been looking on Real St Performance and they do a really good deal on rod/piston combos - $894 for CP pistons and Manley rods, the only thing is the CP's are 9:1 and afaik only come in 86 or 86.5 bore.. I don't want to go out to 86.5 really.. and I'd much rather have as low a CR as available "off the shelf"

I might Email them and see if they're available in a lower CR and 86.25 bore. I suppose the best thing to do is get hold of a bottom end, measure it up and see if it will take a hone and a set of 86mm pistons, but then I'll have an engine getting in the way while I buy the rest of the parts. I know buying pistons first is the "wrong" way to do it but I can buy a set of 86.25's, put them in a drawer and definitely use them when the time comes...

What you really need to do is find a breaker camry and pull the 5S bottom end out of it mate- build once, build it tough
