[Mk2] [NA] Slow Pickup and Grumbling

Post by tmwsccsh »

Hi all,

I have noticed a power pick-up problem in the past few weeks and it seems to be getting worse.

Car is a 1991 G Limited Auto.

Start her up and she's fine - after around 5 minutes, when stationary at lights or a roundabout (or similar), when accelerating away there is a low grumble, struggling, and then once the revs limp up to about 1,500 she will then engage and take off properly. She does move when struggling, but it's slow.

Sometimes it sounds like something is "loose" and needs to engage as part of the problem - the sound is like a loose chain that then registers, but as I say, that's what the sound is like.

I noticed after a journey on Friday that, when I got back, there was a wet patch under the front - a quick look at the radiator and it appears damaged so a new one is needed - is the pick-up problem related?

Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Regards

check out the ecu fault codes, it may have a sensor fault.

That or the simple things like the condition of the dizzy cap and rotor, plugs and leads. The igniter and coil, they can split and let water in which makes them behave badly. also the the mount for them is the earth, if this or the chassis are rusty the resistance goes up and you get poor performance.

All simple things to check. If that is all clear then there are other things to look at like the throttle body, timing, engine sensors, fuel pump, cat/exhaust etc etc. start off with the simple things first.

The sound could be the retarded timing making the top end rattle? Check the other stuff out first. While you are at it check the engine mounts and anything else you can see. Make sure nothing is lose and the vibrations are just making it rattle. Heat shields, exhaust parts, intake pipes etc etc.

Hi.

I am suspecting Dizzy Cap. I have an SL500 Merc as well and the symptoms I am seeing are exactly the same as when they go on that...
