Temperature gauge woes

Was out for a spitited drive this evening. The temp gauge usually sits just below half, tonight it was sitting at quarter for most of the time. I then went to put fuel in the car, came out and the gauge instantly went to it's correct position, stayed there for the next 30 minutes apart from once when it went to quarter at a very fast speed before returning to the normal position.

Throughout this my heater worked fine, my water temperature gauge always read between 79 degrees and 82, my hand commander read exactly the same, oil temps were 84-89 as well (which is where it's always at).
If the thermostat was being stuck open (for talking sake) then it wouldn't have rectified itself in the space of 5 minutes filling up, , any thoughts on this ?


If the power FC uses the same sensor as the dash then the problem has to be the Gauge

I would say stuck on termostat, if it stays on the below the half line on the gauge, once parked up give it it a tap just a above where the termostat while engine running.

Sticky thermostat or dodgy sensor mate although I'd think a sticky thermo would reflect in the gauge readings

Thermostat is likely stuck open, your temp probably went up whilst at garage due to engine heat soak.

I will buy a new thermostat , change it and report back for any future members experiencing similar problems

My mate and me had the same symptoms, Changed the thermostat, fixed the problem

I have a used rev 3 turbo thermostat in good working order when removed from the car.

I am just going to buy a new one, thanks for the offer all the same, do I just ask for a st205 thermostat and sealing gasket ? , with these cars being so reliable over the years I haven't had to order anything from Toyota before

Get it from TCB, I think they do a lower temp as well as stock opening.

I seriously wonder why I even own this car, pay for mot, insurance and tax yet it spends most of it's life just parked up, lucky if I have had her out 4 or 5 times this year

if its thermostat im surprised you dont see a drop in coolant temps

when my thermostat went/split my coolant temp AND oil temp dropped to like 60-65c

Agreed, that's why I started this thread, anyway, I'm off the week after next, I'll exchange the thermostat and update this thread

OMG, no wonder I was thinking about selling my motor, two months parked up without being driven

Anyway, just reporting back that indeed the issue was the thermostat, runs perfect now, thanks for the replies
