Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
is there a difference in the power handling in ignition leads ie genuine toyota vs ngk leads, will the aftermarket ones work better or exactly the same
i know the genuine ones seal better
If you see an MR2 with a raised engine cover, the bottom line is it's probably faster than your car.
Having used Magnacore leads (crap - they kept popping off and offered nothing extra), NGK - Nice fit but after only a few years the car started hesitating when it was wet and finally the genuine leads, all I can say is use nothing else. Sure the genuine ones are expensive but you get what you pay for. Since changing mine the car's ignition has been running like a dream!

I have a map for 2 bar of boost, standard leads working great at that power level, nothing else needed saying

They will last longer than the car, good choice and money well spent

Did you put them on properly?
Had two sets of KV85's on two different MR2's, never had an issue. They do need a very firm push to make sure they engage properly, which is where I think most people go wrong.
They offer nothing extra performance wise, but they look good
Thought Magnacore leads had a partial pop out breather hole that needs human interference to sever it, then the breather hole can exhaust the plug hot air and relieve the pressure build up, and stop the plug cap blowing off.
What about TRD leads?
my old leads must of been on their way out as the car feels smoother now with the new ones, and im pretty sure its not in my head as i only drove it 10 mins early (hot hot hot)

TRD leads are fine, although I couldnt find the rev3 versions but the rev2 ones do fit on a rev3
I've had water ingress issues with the oem toyota leads so next time i'm just gonna go with the NGK leads instead. If someone can tell me why leads made by one japanese oem company are better than the toyota ones made by another please let me know.
Magnecores however i've seen em fall to bits where the kinglead goes into the dizzy so no thanks.
Yep pushed them down as far as they could go. The problem is the set I had used silicon boots instead of the proper fixable plastic clips so after a while they would slide off the dizzy - not fun to be running at full boost and suddenly lose a cylinder!
Genuine leads and indeed the NGK ones have the proper clips so there's no way they can come off. NGKs in my experience had problems in the wet, genuine Toyota leads have been on through this dreadful winter and spring and haven't even vaguely failed - a great test if there ever was one!
Had KV85 leads on my old NA for about 80k miles, they were on it when I I got it. Never had a problem. Bought a set for my new one about 5-6k ago, no issues at all.
Mine is a daily, I do over 25k miles a year in it.
