[Mk2] [NA] Alternator woes

Well our car started fine the other morning and the noticed it ......... 4 warning lights

Battery
oil level
brake
engine compartment fan

I assumed that the rain had got into the alternator and fried the regulator

Purchased a new regulator cos a new alt is out of my price range and guess what ............... No joy

At first the gauge one the dash was showing the alt as charging but after the new regulator was fitted even that no does not show signs of charge

is it the alternator or something else ???
