Do I need a BOV?

Post by CalMac »

Do I need to run a BOV if I have a screamer pipe and TIAL wastegate?

I just don't understand the magic of these damn turbos

If not, is it just a case of blanking the intercooler hardpipe where the recirc would usually go and then re-routing a vacuum line?

It's Martin's old ATS TD06 kit btw if that makes a difference.

having a screamer and EW has got nothing to do with running or not running a BOV.

entirely separate devices for different jobs.

though really, a bovs job is pointless imo unless you have an afm.

Ok cheers for clearing that up Jim :thumleft:

Can I just buy a stock bov and pipework then?

buy the blanking plate (if you have a stock hardpipe) and enjoy better shifting response.

or reroute a stock bov, is really up to you.

point being, doesnt matter that you run internal or external wastegate.

i personally ran no bov for a good 15k miles on my old rev5.
and it came from japan not running one as well with god knows how much boost run through it or how many miles while over there.

although Jim i'd say that its worth commenting that running a blanking plate does potentially add extra stresses onto the turbo itself as it is screamed to a stop.

it wont come screaming to a stop, or anywhere close to it.
pure myth.

stress is very subjective, there is not enough stress to do any evidential damage. it has been discussed many times for many years on many forums, noone has damaged a turbo because they ran without a bov.
the turbo undergo's plenty more stress than a back wave of pressure from running no bov.

not only does it sound great, you get better performance.

But there has to be an acknowledgement that it does put more stress on the turbo than running one....plenty of people have poped turbos very quickly without one (outside the Mr2 community).

sorry your not going to get that acknowledgement from me.
its a BS myth.

there is no evidence anywhere online to back up the theory it will blow your turbo.

Oooo so I'm gonna get mad choo choo turbo noises? \:D/

I'm going to go that route - so many differing opinions on this but the general consensus does seem to be that it's a myth, and if anything is down to strength/composition of the turbo shaft. I'd like to think that being an aftermarket turbo kit it might have a stronger shaft than standard anyway

I'm also a part of the 'Bovless" croud and totally swear by it.

I'll actually have the blanking plate that Jim has referred to for sale soon as I'll be needing a custom hotpipe madeup with my new turbo. Let me know if you want to make a deal on it :thumleft:

So why did Toyota put a OEM bov on it in the first place?

They didn't. They used a recirculation valve

if you've got a screamer pipe you need the loudest bov you can find. forget about milliseconds of performance.

I'm not a fan of loud BOV's tbh, I'll leave that to the VXR and ST owners

I'd happily use the standard recirc as I like the sound that makes through my ARC box anyway (subtle) but if I can get away without having to buy one and just blank it off that's even better
