R888 or R1R tyre choice opinions

Hi folks

Getting ready for a roadtrip in July so starting to look at tyre choices. Planning in doing 4000 miles in total and want something that I can utilise when the time comes on some of the more exotic roads we will be visiting.

I'm considering moving up from standard 15s to 16s and fitting a R1R's all round, wondering if anyone has had experience with them?
My other option would be to keep the standard 15s and fit R888's all round so opinions are most welcome.

205/45r16 front 225/45r16 rear R1R
205/50r15 front 225/50r15 rear R888

R888's (R888R now) are a bit too hardcore for the road IMO - great tyre in the dry clearly, but you are sacrificing a lot when it rains. Also, you're rarely going to be able to exploit an R888's full potential on the road.

Have you had a look at the AD08R as well?

Have a look at Nankang NS2R and Federal 595RSR.

They're 'budget' semi slick/track tyres. I used the NS2R's over last summer and was extremely impressed with them. I'll definitely be replacing them with another set

I have looked at those options for once I'm back from.the trip but ideally wanted something with a bit more grip for this trip as will be passing Nürburgring on the way home.

The tyres are literally just for the trip and a few track days when I'm home if there's any tread left

Cannot recommend the kuhmo v700 v70a tyre enough

Run them sprint last year. In the wet lapped faster than a 400hp mk2 I was in a Na. superb tyre

I have exactly that combination in AD08Rs. They've not got the raw, dy grip of R888s, but they're grippier than a normal street tyre (provided it's not too cold) and aren't a disaster in the wet either. Only cost my about £100 a corner too

I think an AD08R or R1R would be better compromise on the road - apparently they are pretty similar tyres performance wise.

Yes it would seem very similar both tyres have an average of 83% Overall on tyre review very similar specs and same price to.

I use Nankang NS2R on mine and pretty good in the dry and wet. I really dont get people who still say they are ditch finders.

The NS2R is very different even from the NS2, let alone the XR611 that is one of the few tyres left in the stock rear 225/50/15 size!

I have the NS2 not NS2R on mine for the last 5+ years obviously not the same set LOL

Cant fault them whatsoever i also had them on my old E30 325i again cant fault them.

I just think its just a myth that they are ditch finders or the people who've had them either drove like a complete head fit or just cant drive at all
