Manifold Warp GEN 2

Post by mr299ron »

Recently my gen 2 turbo has been making a ticking noise when warm that sounds like it's coming through the side air vent if you listen closely when out the car.

I've done some research and have read that a warped manifold is common the 91 and 92s, so I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on this?

I can't hear it up top with engine lid open, and it's definitely not coming from the bottom. It sounds like it's coming directly from the right side air vent.

My rear muffler also makes a "metal in a tin can" sound when above 3.5k. This is being replaced, but just wondering if this could be related.

The car is running 15psi, so maybe the pressure on a stock exhaust system is too much after 20 years.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Cheers

thought it was the rev1 that had the manifold issues?

you don't say which side air vent but i'll assume the driver's side. could the aluminium intercooler and the steel fan surround expanding at different rates. if the steel has rusted maybe it's moving a bit more now?

heat shields make that hot ticking sound, maybe one or more of the fixings has broken on one of them?

have you tried the tube trick to track down a sound? get a long cardboard tube like from a roll of tinfoil, then use that to locate the area a sound is coming from.

then when it's all cooled down you can have a closer look in that area.

Not sure bud, that's why I've come here.. :)

I have also mentioned that it's the right side of the car, but no worries. To confirm, yes it's the drivers side. The right side. Sorry, did I say that it's the right side? ;)

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a go.

Cheers

I think it is very unlikely to warp a standard mani, they are really solid. Very heavy.

I would agree with the above.

Okay Draven, thanks for clearing it up. Just heard it was a common issue with some of the earlier 2s as a ticking noise has risen.
