Does anybody recognise this MR2?

Post by Tsukijin-Akiyama »

Just wondering if anybody recognises this MR2, rescued it from the scrapper as a project. Needs absolutely everything replacing so I can make it beautiful again but I'm getting there. Seems to have been without mot or tax for a long time. Just trying to find any old history, information or photos of it. It seems to have two registrations, H886JVK and 683UTU, not sure which country the second one originated from.

May jog someone's memory, unfortunately as I'm a new member I am unable to share a photo so I will have to describe it, it's a 1991 JDM tin top NA, painted in red glitter, matte black with rainbow chrome areas and a small stock looking spoiler. It has an aftermarket bumper fitted which had been blended and it had led indicators at the front. The front wipers and side repeaters have been totally removed and filled in. Someone loved it once.

There is also an issue with the engine which is that the fans won't switch off if anybody could point me in the right direction for that please?

Thanks for any input 😊 Tsuki

fans could be temp sensor on the engine lid unplugged
If you see an MR2 with a raised engine cover, the bottom line is it's probably faster than your car.

Can't help with car history.
Removed wipers??

If it is engine bay fan the temp sensor on the engine lid is goosed or wiring fault to it.
If it is the rad fans perm on then it is either the rad temp sensor or if the aircon has been ripped out there is a sensor in the frunk that needs to be left plugged in or the rad fan stays on.

Sounds like an interesting project, also sounds like a lot of work too though? When you say needs almost everything replacing, do you mean bodywork wise, panels and welding? I don't mean to sound negative but is it worth it especially being a non turbo?

Can you do some of the bodywork yourself? It'll be interesting to see how it goes, fair play for trying to save an old car though. I've the same issue with the intercooler engine bay fan staying on, i think the wiring at the sensor connector is the problem on mine, 1 of the wires is exposed where the insulation is missing and worn.

Looking forward to the pics :)

Time consuming and expensive certainly but it is what me and my partner do for work and for fun, between us we can create parts from fibreglass and carbon, weld, vinyl wrap and find our way around generally with a bit of technical help so if we see something we want we will tend to go for something that needs a fair bit of work because it feels nice at the end. Our weak spot is electrics 😞

I saw the mr2 sat in the line for the crusher and I felt very sorry for it and thought it would look nice with my fto and it would be a change from fwd. It's not got much rust thankfully with the exception of the sills which we are used to as we own FTOs too 😨 since we've had it, it's now starting and running but as I want to add it to my show collection I want all of the consumables and most of the moving parts to be replaced with the exception of the actual engine block, and to make some custom bodywork on it so it looks a bit different.

The reason I was hoping to find the previous people who started the project to find out more. There are strange things (besides the paint) ;) like filling the wipers in and cementing (literally) all the light wiring into the bumper, it also custom fitted supra lights that do not work properly and are sort of blended in so it might have helped to ask about the wiring or know if there was anything else to know but I am confident that it's been abandoned halfway through so everything will have to come out anyway.

Thankyou all for the suggestions for the fans, should have been more specific, the frunk fans, yes the air con has been removed.a new cooling system is going in as the whole thing has been painted over :/ but hopefully i've made a good start.

Rescue from the scrap you say? I did exactly that.

Here's my build thread, if you're interested:

REDMR2 beautiful! What a save.

I have miles to go, it's my first mr2 but I'm confident it will look as good as everything else we have here just needs the time putting into it. Much to people's disappointment I'm more into the cosmetic aspect so it not being a turbo bears no importance to me in the way of cost effectiveness for saving it,as long as it looks great on my club stand and everything is properly fitted and maintained.

Abovetherim Thankyou very much for your kind offer, if I get stuck I will come and find you :)

Thanks buddy :thumleft:

It would be great to see another MR2 brought back from the scrap pile. Are you starting a build thread? I'd be interested in seeing how you get on, and watching the progress. :thumleft:

I may well do that, just need to get the supra finished and on its way then I can get down to business with the mr2. Hopefully I'll have him ready by show season if we can get the hours in between customers lol.

Certainly got your work cut out! Interesting to see how you get on. I take it the supra light mod can easily be reversed?

Well, they've filled out the rear quarter where the light sits and modified the boot panel so it's irritating, but, I sort of like them so I will just work around them until the last minute then decide if I can make it work with the vision. I'll just sit here and catch all the rice comments for now 😁
