Rev counter incorrect reading - fix

Post by mrfil13 »

Hi All,

Recently had the joy of my rev counter not working, it was completely incorrect, idle was about 100 revs, 70mph was around 2k , you get the picture. Thought i would share.

Anyway, simple ish fix, just need to replace two capacitors on the tacho.

These are the capacitors i purchased
Maplin code = KQ64U
10µF 35V 85°C Electrolytic Capacitor

Remove the instrument cluster, i followed this guide to remove the tacho from the cluster (actually used it to fix my speedo last year which was reading wrong as well) i managed to pull it apart with a slim screwdriver and my hands.

Below are pics of the two capacitors. Can't remember which one was faulty but i replaced both anyway. Anyway rev counter is spot on again.

Hmmmm :-k presumably if this can happen with the rev counter then maybe a similar fix can be d0ne f0r ddgy speed0's?

My speed0 0ver reads, 0dds 0n are that the previ0us 0wner has fitted the need1e In the wr0ng p0siti0n with the l0ckw00d 0ver1ays he's fitted

That 0r the litltle b0x 0f gubbins that c0nverts speed signal, but this may be a g00d easy fix if speed0 is the same :thumleft:

Same fix for the Speedo, did it last year, followed the youtube clip.

If you look in my previous posts (there aren't many) i posted about the speedo with some details in.

My speedo is spot on now comparing to the GPS, that's with 17" wheels.

I would recommend doing the speedo and tacho at the same time while its all out, the caps are cheap and the longest part of the job is removing and fitting the cluster.

My tacho started going about 7 months after the speedo.
