intercooler pipework heat soak, load of old tosh

Post by masterbateson »

As above I have been pondering and seen some claims by manufacturers that there pipes are better and other are great heat soaks, this claim in particular was claimed for the hot pipe in particular for certain aftermarket intercoolers.

Given the point that it is indeed a hot pipe, Im not entirely sure I am buying it that the engine bay ambient temperature is going to exceed whats being sent off of the turbo? :?: :?

But I am just pondering about this, what do you think? :-k

Here's an idea i currently have tho, how about getting some alloy pipework and then sheilding it within silicone hoses if we think it is a valid factor or some area for improvement.

Other thing i did ponder is... if im right about the heat soak non effect, due too inside of the pipe being warmer, presumably if you shrouded a metal pipe in silicone that could make matters worse, because at least uninsulated pipe work might radiate heat outwards?

I dunno :study:

wrapping the cold pipe is beneficial, wrapping the hot pipe isnt.

Makes sense! :thumleft: I thought as much, what do you reckon jim to claims by some hot pipe manufacturers that the pipe soaks up heat from engine bay on hot pipe, i reckon thats guff myself.

It depends where your hot pipe runs...if it is routed next to the exhaust manifold or turbine housing, then shielding that side of the pipe is a good idea...the air in the pipe is not going to be hotter than the manifold :eye:

well any metal will heatsoak in the engine bay if it is connected to hot parts, has hot air flowing through it or even if its sitting next to something very hot.
namely in our case, the manifold.

you only need to hold the hotpipe (be careful) to see this is hot virtually the whole time once up to temp as its running over the manifold and has hot turbo air heating it up constantly.

however leaving it exposed will keep it at its lowest temp possible, as airflow and general ambiant heat in the bay will be less than the heat inside, so will equalise slightly.

wrapping it will possibly stop heat from the manifold, but the temps inside the pipe itself, now have no way to dissipate.

thats my understanding anyways.

I agree with you, but you need to think how much heat radiates off a hot exhaust manifold. Wrapping the whole pipe is a bad idea- agreed, but some shielding on the side facing an extreme heat source to reflect radiated heat is a good thing imo

i know theres alot of heat off the manifold, i did mention it

yep i agree shielding is fine, but namely over the manifold itself, not the pipe, if you can double shield even better.

if you have no option of heatshielding over the manifold, then sure some reflective wrap on the underside of the pipe is fine, just not all of it imo.

though probably doesnt look as good half wrapping something, but makes sense if you cant run a mani heatshield.
