Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
Just had my OSF wheel bearing changed about 10 days ago and having taken it in for geometry set up this morning I've been told the wheel is wobbling all over the place again
So either the bearing kit I bought from TCB (T137051) was flawed or the hub itself is broken in some way - how do I diagnose a 'broken' hub? The mechanic who changed my bearing didn't mention anything looking worn or cracked. The steel spacer ring bit was also replaced as Trevor at TCB said they're usually pretty knackered.
I'm only running -1.7 deg. camber with Tein top mounts, Koni inserts and Eibach springs on AD08R so can't imagine the front wheels are having a particularly hard life! I've done maybe 80 miles since the bearing change, no off-roading
By "wobbling all over the place" do you mean there's play in the bearing?
Have you checked the drive flange and disc for run out? Any play in your bushes or lower ball joint? Any play in the damper?
How old are the Tein top mounts?

It's just the hub itself that's wobbling a couple of mm, if you grab the wheel (while up in the air) and wiggle it around. Had the brake disc off a couple of weeks ago which is when I discovered the worn bearing and it's definitely the hub/bearing itself - everything else around it remains stationary while it moves slightly.
I had a rear bearing replaced and it lasted about a month, either it was a dodgy bearing or the mechanic damaged it putting it in. I took it back and they fixed it again for free. I deal with a lot of bearings at work and ive never seen a faulty one but ive seen a lot of bad mechanics.
Called TCB, they've never sold a bearing kit which failed prematurely so I've just paid for another and a used hub flange in case that's the culprit. From reading online it can only really be down to that or under-torquing the bearing nut.
I've used this mechanic for years, he's a good guy but I think his young apprentice did my car :\ under-tightening the nut is pretty much all that could be done wrong though surely?
Yeah- exactly that- the outer ring, and it needs to go in completely straight with a press. If he presses on the middle sections it will damage the bearing, and if it goes in on the pi$$ it will be damaged as well.
Pretty straight forwards, but something an apprentice might get wrong maybe...
Just gone back to have the geo sorted again having fitted some lower front springs.. To be told that the bearing has play again
And that was after maybe 100 miles maximum as I hardly drove it over the last couple of months. As above the hub flange was changed along with the bearing previously.
Any other ideas? I've left the car with Northampton Motorsport for now and asked them to find the problem and fit a new bearing as I cba to take it to my usual mechanic and source parts myself this time, I've had enough they commented that they massively over-torqued the hub nut and it got rid of the play but obviously that's not a solution.
