ECU Reset and Fuel System cleaner (BGK44)

Post by mr299ron »

So after my drive back from work this morning I stopped at Shell to stick some 99ron in the motor.

As the engine was warm I thought I'd reset the ECU at the same time as I hadn't done it since I owned the car, and who knows what octane the dude was running. I also put in some BGK44 fuel system cleaner, as people have claimed this can actually cleans the injectors, unlike other brands...

First thing I notice after the ECU reset my idle dropped to about 500rpms. I expected this as I've just reset the ECU at this point so I'm sure there's some side effects. Shortly after it sorts itself out my idling is near perfect, far more perfect than it was before! My car would idle at between 500-750, and if I hadn't idled after a cold startup into a fully warm engine, upon idle the car would start at over 1000 and then eventually drop. This could happen multiple times. The end result however always being between 500-750.

So now after the reset my idle is, as mentioned, perfect! Car seems to boost a little better and quicker too, however at this point I'm sure I'm just making it up..

The ECU reset consisted of the following:

Pulled out all EFI fuses in the engine bay and the ECU fuse.

Filled up with petrol whilst it reset

Pumped the brakes 3 times (4 just for luck) then went in and paid, and came out and started the car.

99ron

The 'trick' to an ecu reset is how you drive the first miles afterwards, this is the basis for the ecus choice of map.

Reset it, drive it warm then find a good free stretch of road and give it the beans. Rev it out, accelerate hard, basically treat it like a race car for a bit. This will define the map for the next few hundred/thousand miles (how many exactly i'm not sure).

It will feel like a completely different beast if the car has really only been babied and not really driven hard.

Indeed. I chopped a 2.0s drive E89 Z4 on the way back home from the fuel station down a fairly long dually. He had the first squeeze of the throttle, but I kept with him and slowly reeled him in. Excellent.

I then proceeded to give it some more before I got home, so I would believe/hope I've done it correctly. It definitely seems to pull better throughout the rev range. The Rev2s drop off at 6k completely and pull from about 2750/3k and before it would pull from 3k to about 5/5250 and i could feel it go a little flat if I'm honest, but now it really pulls all the way through to then drop nearer the 6k mark :)

pulling the fuses only resets to the original map and clears the error states thus giving the car the factory fueling levels and ignition state. As such it doesn't learn 'hard driving', at least that's my understanding of it :) Don't get me wrong, the car feels like a rocket after you do it as all error states are reset
