Exhaust advice for Rev5 N/A

Post by ghosty999 »

Hi There

I'm looking to replace the back box (first) then save some more and buy the manifold early next year.

What is a good stock looking back box that will give more of a sporty tone without being too loud? (no fart/bass cannons) My stock back box is just becoming welding patchwork haha. The mongoose back boxes seem a little too loud for a daily drive?

Any advice?

My first MR2 was an NA. Thought the Mongoose was a quality, stock looking exhaust. Also fairly quiet.

Cheers! Good to know! Did you fit an upgraded manifold? Did you notice any BHP gains?

Mine was bolted onto a 3SFE engine, so power gains would have been un-noticeable!

Mine was cat back. No change in manifolds etc.

I'm also running a 2.0 L 3S-GE I4, so guessing doing the whole exhaust system would be a waste of cash if aiming for extra HP? Might just do the backbox in that case

Yeah, if aiming at extra bhp, look at 3SGTE and V6 conversions.

If keeping NA, then just go for a cat back exhaust system and induction kit. :thumleft:

I wouldn't bother with the manifold, the stock item isn't that bad really, if a little heavy. The cheaper aftermarket ones are crap, they crack very easily. Good luck finding one of the decent JDM aftermarket ones!

The Janspeed backbox (*not* Japspeed) is another that isn't that much louder than stock, just has a much nicer sound. Looks like this:

Gutted mine got damaged when my old MR2 was rear ended :(

That looks really smart! Nice and stock looking. Could be what I'm looking for. However I have an offer on an almost new Mongoose with res from a friend. What would you advise?

Take the mongoose with resonated decat. It's an excellent system.

Think that's me convinced, waiting on the guy to get his new system so I can get his old Mongoose

While you have it off the car, if you want it looking really smart get a polishing pad and drill attachment from Toolstation - http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p91502 - and some metal polish. I use the Autoglym one, other brands are available.

If it's a few years old, chances are it's looking a little dull. You can polish it back to a mirror finish very easily. here's my Fujitsubo after 15 mins work - it was looking rather dull from a load of surface scratches from wire wool:

At some point I'm going to take it off and do the pipe work as well. And cut that bloody grill off!

I will do exactly that! I think it's near new but will still give it a good clean. Keeping the black guard over it though, trying to keep as stock as possible, more of a restoration guy than a modder

Mongoose exhausts are widely regarded to be the best commonly available exhaust for the NA MR2, I've had one on both of mine. Rolled tips on my current one, which I think look nicer :)
