If both sills have rusted through, to do it properly you're looking at about £1000 to have both sides repaired and painted.

Have a look at the inner sill though first, as it may just be surface rust. Are the outer sills bubbling?

I think the inner sills Are shot as when the wife pulled the sponge out (as my hands are too fat to fit in the hole) there were crumbs of rust falling out of the sill and she reckons theres a hole at least 3 fingers wide. So I mi aswell get the rest of the bodywork cleaned up and Looking mint over the winter then focus on getting some cash together for a v6 swap in the new year

Good plan. Get the chassis sorted first, then V6 it. :thumleft:

It's probably cheaper to just re-shell with the current values of MR2 shells! I've heard of mint shells with decent paintwork going to scrap once the car is broken for parts, and the owners aren't even getting a penny from the scrapyard

It'll cost more than a thousand quid to reshell the car!

They're practically being given away..?

All it takes is time if you're just swapping parts

I sold my mint tin top shell for £200.

Lot of work reshelling the car. Not even worth thinking about imo.

I only went for a reshell because I wanted a T bar.

I was only telling the OP as he's concerned about cost as most of us would be. Also if he's planning a V6 conversion then that's halfway to a re-shell anyway and obviously he isn't put off by the prospect of getting stuck in!

Not trying to argue, just the way I see it a re-shell makes more sense financially :thumleft:

Regardless of who did it, it's a lot of work to reshell a car.

Agreed. I reshelled a escort rs turbo into a xr3i convertible. Pain in the backside. You forget about all the little niggly bits. Not just dropping an engine in. Mind you , i did do it in the snow.

I don't think I would re shell it as most of these cars are at least 20 years old so unless it's been kept in a museum there's always going to be a tiny bit of rust especially with the t bars. So it might work out more expensive but I'm going to stick with my shell and give it the full treatment maybe even a respray then sort the engine out later. who knows maybe the 2grs might start coming down in price.

All old cars of any make/model will rust eventually. What you do about it depends on what the car is worth to you and how long you want to keep it.

I would guess that most car drivers don't even consider a respray or it costs so much they choose to get a new car or newer car instead.

If anyone wants an mr2 that is structurally sound and looks good then sooner or later the car will need the rust sorting out and a respray to protect the bodywork. Some people forget the paint helps protect the metal and it is not just to make the car look a nice colour.

There will be rust in places that cant be seen until a car is stripped for respray. That is a good time to sort out all the rust. Get the rust done properly or it can come back very quickly in a couple of years.

I have found this out so many times especially with mr2s as young guys buy these cars as cheap thrills but when they realise these cars need time money and tlc then poor old mr2 ends up in scrap. my mr2 is for keeps so I don't mind spending more than I would ever get back so having a good solid shell is worth it to me.

Are there are other rust hotspots I should be checking. I've checked the sills t bar and the corners of the boot is there anyware else I'm missing
