ATS TD06 shaft play
Is it normal to have a certain amount of play in the shaft? I'm able to wobble it by hand with very little effort so that the turbine is touching the compressor housing wall

Yeah, as above this is not good at all, a turbo should have very little play, and the turbine/compressor should never touch the housings.

Being a journal bearing turbo it can be rebuilt, just hope it hasnt bent/damaged any blades on the wheels or it may get expensive

Re: ATS TD06 shaft play
Turbo doesn't need a rebuild, It is one of the strongest i have felt out of dozens and dozens of turbos i have been in contact with over the years.
The description isn't quite factual though

This turbo will kick ass for many thousands of miles, shaft play is an absolute minimum, seals are good, just fit it and enjoy

Re: ATS TD06 shaft play
Sorry Martin I wasn't having a dig, it does just have a bit of play in it and as I know nothing about turbos it worried me!
If you say it's ok I'll just get on with it

On a side note, anyone know a UK supplier of the T3 gasket for this turbo? From turbo to adapter http://www.atsracing.net/Parts/Details/TUR-T3GASKET

Re: ATS TD06 shaft play
I'm sorry but if the compressor wheel is touching the housing then It needs a rebuild.

Re: ATS TD06 shaft play
Having checked again this morning it doesn't seem the wheel is actually touching the housing.
I've tried pushing the shaft to one side and turning it to see if it scrapes or scratches the housing but tbh it doesn't, so my mistake there.

Re: ATS TD06 shaft play
Plays an odd one
.
.
in out bad
.
.
play side to side, centrifugal force keeps that in check
.
.
still not ideal but not to much of a problem if its only minor

I would say that is more free play than I would like to see on a turbo.

It may well last for months but will start leaking oil at some point and if the wheels start rubbing on the housings they would need replacing as well as the bearings.

The big pain is having to remove it to have it rebuilt.

If you want to send it down to me I can check it out and let you have a price to rebuild it

The Video makes it look worse, when you feel it by hand the play is very slight.

This is how it arrived when i bought it from Glen, i felt it and didn't give it a second thought.

If i bought this turbo now i would have no concerns whatsoever, there is nothing wrong with it.

Fit the turbo calum, as long as the lines are working and it is getting oiled and cooled it will run for years without issues, i have come across many turbos in a different leauge to this one, even the turbo on the mule has more side to side play that this turbo.

If i had any concern i wouldn't have sold it.

Re: ATS TD06 shaft play
All turbos have play as they get used, it is just catching them before they do too much damage to themselves.

Both our van and Allroad turbos destroyed themselves and we had no signs anything was wrong till we got the smoke screen out of the exhaust.

You just have to judge when it the right time for the rebuild.
