Is it possible to use heater rear windscreen as FM/AM aerial

Post by tsango »

i assume this is how some modern cars get their radio signal.

Anyone know a way, or any one that can wire up the antenna to the heated rear screen??

My Jag has that, and when you turn the heated rear screen on it interferes with the signal. From 2008 on they fitted the shark fin aerial on the roof instead. So not sure if it is the best idea.

On my MR2 I had the aerial removed and smoothed out, and fitted an ebay aerial (like a plastic stick on one that you can mount anywhere you like) and ran it through into the front trunk. But then fitted a fibreglass bonnet and the signal went rubbish again. Need a new one now as mine snapped but when I do I will try to find a spot where it picks up decent signal but is not visible. I think that is the best way forward though if you are trying to get rid of the stock look aerial.

Hmmmm, I thought that my BMW X5 had aerial in heated rear windscreen as there is no obviously signs of an aerial and that works really well.

Yeah I had my aerial hole blocked up and had rear quarter resprayed ect.

The aerial I had fitted is a windscreen mounted one and is useless. I cannot pick up any AM and FM is extremely bad. You can sometime get a slight signal but no listenable at all.

Modern cars have it in the window but on a separate circuit. You will see the aerial part doesn't demist the screen. I'm sure if you disconnect the one in the two it'll work but obviously don't think you can have both.

The 09 civic I had did the same as dans. Didnt pick the radio up that well and when used rear demist it was next to useless.
Saying that in all my years of mr2s the amount of times I've had to use the rear demist is practically nil.

Interesting but can almost see that ending up in the bin! :D

Might try getting a stick style one and stuffing it in the wing or something.

Well that won't work! A metal car body acts as a faraday cage. That's why aerials are always one the outside of a car or embedded in the glass. Stick it within the metal shell or, worse, in the thin gap between the wing and the chassis and you won't get very good signal.

The old ford escorts and sierras had blue boxes in the tailgates to allow the heated rear window to work as an aerial. I found this after I had mounted an aerial run the coax to the dash and found a working aerial plug behind the dash #-o
