Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
I decided to strip the paint off my wheels today as some of the paint was flaking off close to the tyres. So I bought some paint stripper and applied it to the front wheel and found that they're exactly as above except for the number of bolt holes of course. I knew they were Hart racing wheels, staggered 16x8 on the back and 15x7 on the front. I assume that the coating is some sort of plastic as the paint stripper didn't touch it. I've managed to get quite a bit of the paint off using the paint stripper but its such a messy , horrible job that I would prefer to have them professionally refurbished to original spec. Does anyone know if sandblasting would be ok or would it be too harsh and remove the plastic white coating as well? I presume they are quite rare, they are certainly light compared to the 17" I've just taken off the car. Anyone know just out of interest how much they're worth...........Thanks peeps.
Sand blasting will take it back to bare metal, it's pretty brutal - although there may be different grit levels available (eg. walnut shells, glass etc.) To do them properly wheels are usually dipped in acid for a few hours, then blasted and cleaned up followed by prep and powder coating
You're in Telford but maybe you're willing to travel - I had Scott of Revolution do my Works Anhelos a few years ago, he's based in Brackley (not sure if he's still going) and this is his site http://www.revolutionbpp.co.uk/index.html.
As stated above, Cardhore (James) does some excellent work too
