When I first start my car there is a lot of coughing and poor running for about 3 or 4 seconds then it evens out.

I'm not sure whether these are related or separate issues and whether it is the starter motor at fault.

It usually does it when I've not used the car for a while.
I might try removing the starter motor first and see if it needs lubricating.
If that doesn't
sort it I might try changing it for a used one and then I'll see if it's a relay as you suggest.

As a start, try connecting a jump lead from the negative battery terminal to gearbox/engine.
Any better? Worth a quick check as the connection from battery to gearbox can deteriorate and lot easier than removing the starter.
