Frunk catch failure....any way in?!!

Post by acf8181 »

Now, i haven't checked the cable in the car is still attached, but from the feel of it when you try to operate it, its still pulling the cable.

Catch was always stiff and had to get a finger round edge of bonnet to lift it, but had to remove it to change a/c condensor....i set it as high as possible on refitting.

Anyway, until i'm in i can't work out whats up....so, HELP?! please!!!

You can get at the area from below but there's an anti tamper cover fitted to the catch which makes it awkward but you should be able to tell if the cables come adrift

You threw me by saying you can get to the bit from below, the engine lid then sprung to mind as the front and back are enclosed, Well sort of... cheers for clearing that up though

Couple of conments..

When re-fitting the catch why did you try to set it as high as possible? (Should aim to fit it exactly as Toyota had fitted it otherwise you risk the bonnet lifting slightly too much when driving at speed and letting rainwater passed the rubber weather strip and into the frunk).

I have had the front catch failure problem and an independent garage familiar with mr2 got it open. I think it was a weak spring.
They showed me how they did it. There is a place on the bonnet where you can whack it with the palm of your hand and it pops open if the cable has released the lock.
It was a few years ago so I forget exactly where the sweet spot is... but it was on the driver side near the edge and maybe above the shock absorber.

Don't whack it too hard or you might dent the bonnet.

I set it high as possible as it had been stiff to open so i thought it may have been too low, was then gonna adjust if bonnet sat high.

Ah, interesting, sounds like a plan

If your bonnet isn't popping up you need to adjust the black rubber stops on the underside of the bonnet to get more upward force when the cable is pulled. Have you tried getting someone to pull the cable while you get a plastic leaver under it to force it up.
Had this problem on my brothers golf and a well placed bang with my Palm while he pulled the cable sorted it.

can you not put the headlights up and get your fingers under the bonnet that way? You may have to remove the plastic headlight shroud but that's easy enough

I might be wrong but I thought part of the purpose of the black rubber stops was to align the edge of the bonnet with the wings and nose cone?

When my previous mr2 went in for respray, the car restorer cut some of them down to size. He didn't realise they could be turned in/out by hand to adjust the level. It was the first mr2 he had done.
If he had put each one back in exactly the same place it came from then no adjustment would have been necessary!

...this whilst someone else held lever in car open worked!

Think catch needs to be set as low as poss in car, so there's some tension on it with bonnet shut (if that makes sense?!)
