Sub & Amp install completed

Post by Ian Geary »

Finally, after a hot and fustrating day.

I've got a 400W JBL 4 channel amp stuffed in the front bonnet, driving a pair of Infinity Kappa 6.5" components in the doors, and a 10" JBL GT1002 sub behind the passenger seat.

It sounds much better than the previous set-up of just the Infinty components being driven by the Head Unit, and a (now redundant) pair of Infinity 6x9 in the cubby holes.

But some of that will be down to the amp of course. There is now at least some bass present in the car, although it isn't fantastic - the passenger seat muffles a lot of it - it sounds distintly better with the passenger seat folded forward. Don't think the g/f will be impressed. At least she'll get a free back massage from the sub.

Anyway, if anyone's still with me, I've got a question to pose.

The amp has High Pass/ Low Pass and flat setting for each channel.

The sub is obviously Low Pass. But should the components be High Pass or just flat?

The amp manual suggests High Pass, but then my component woofers aren't really used. I couldn't decern much difference when driving though, so I suppose it doesn't matter too much.

Hi Ian

Stick it on flat, the components must have the cross overs?

High = 6KHz - 20KHz treble
Low = 20Hz - 300Hz bass
Mid = 300 - 6KHz mig range
Flat = 20hz - 20KHz full range.

Don't quote me on the above figers but can't be far off!

If they do this will sort out the mid & top freq and stick them up the right speaker, plus the x overs will be provided with the full rage to sort out and not just the top end.

The infinity kappa's components are good I have a set stuck int the doors.

I found the Kappa 6 x 9 were bloody auwfull even amped, I found that a cheep set of Maystar 6 x 9 for £40 kicked ass, put the Infinity ones to shame.

Hope this helps

I went with one 4 channel amp because it was easier to wire in and fit 1 amp than 2 - ie only one power cable, earth but I did use seperate RCA for front/ rear.

I used 2 of the 4 channels to drive my single sub, by bridging those two channels together (most amps will have capacity to bridge a stereo channel for an amp).

But if you want to drive 2 subs, you could easily use a channel for each sub, in which case the two subs would have stereo imaging (not a lot of use at this frequency though).

I wouldn't say a 4 chl amp is better than 2 seperate amps per-se. The amps can be tailored to the type of speaker. So a big power sub you'd want a high powered mono amp to drive it, and not stretch a mediocre 4 channel amp to try and power it (which is what I've got).

Whether one mono amp could drive 2 subs? I'm not sure. I thought a mono amp had just a [+] and [-] to a sub.

As I don't know much about this area, I'm going to stop and direct you to www.talkaudio.co.uk which is where I picked up a lot of advice, as well as the product and supplier recommendations.

They're quite a technical bunch, but every now and then someone will drop to the level of a newbie and explain things.

They don't like people not searching and hijaking posts though.
