Hello folks.

Got my box of goodies for the cambelt change, belt pulleys and a better than mine replacement crank pulley.
Had a test run of doing the timing with the old belt, one thing has got me curious though.
have a look at the pic below.

I initially thought the mark you line up with 0 deg tdc was the circle, i have now had a  moment and realized its the tiny nick on the outside edge(highlighted with a straight line) thats the alignment mark in fact.

So the question is, what on earth is the circle indentation for?

The BGB shows you how to do it:

The circle(s) are where Toyota removed some material to balance the pulley :thumleft:

This seems to be a pretty good guide :thumleft:
http://www.midshiprunabout.org/mk2/973/
and within lied a clue that my circle was not all i thought it was.

As Martin has pointed out, i looked at the guide and thought the circle was my timing mark  I hadnt even noticed the small notch at the edge

Then when i looked at the above guide you will see in one of the pics the crank pulley shown has several circle shaped indentations and not one like mine
at step 23 there is a pulley like mine with one circle but go to step 30 and you see a pulley with loads of drilled out circles.

The balancing thing for the pulley all makes sense, but its a bit embarassing to think i thought that drilled out circle was my allignment mark

Oh well live and learn.

OK- I guess if I squint and look at the picture I can see how you got that wrong!

To be fair it's pretty standard on most cars to have a notch in the crank pulley to line up TDC to, but I'm assuming you've worked on other cars in the past...apologies!

I have done a lot of work on my other cars before, but i am definitely a hobbyist/amateur spanner monkey its not my job so to speak.

One thing i have always shy'ed away from is the cambelt 8-[ which i have had a fear of and doing a cylinder head gasket.

So this is a 1st for me

Same here, never wanted to touch the timing belt or change the head gasket until I thought sod it not much money involved if I break something and the sense of achievement is good. Plus everyone on here gives extremely good advice / assistance. :thumleft:

What i can say for deffo is that if i turn the engine over so that I get the inlet and exhaust cams to line up with their notches facing 12 and meeting up with the mark on the case/block the marking on the crank pulley never lines up anywhere near TDC for cylinder one marking.

Also if i turn engine over(i have taken plugs out to make it easier) if i turn till notch of exhaust cam is spot on lined up, the inlet cam is almost lined up but slightly retarded, think this is fairly minor though compared with the fact that I can never get timing mark "0" if i have turned engine over till exhaust and inlet cams are lined up at 12 o clock.
Think this confirms my fears as to why the dizzy was at one end when we checked ignition timing.

You had all the infomation here from the BGB way back, why did you not just do what it said.

The circle is a balancing mark. You see crank pulleys with 3 or 4 of these so I guess they were balanced up by hand by Toyota.

My sarcasm was obviously lost on you.

You do need to read the BGB, not just look at the pretty pictures. If you had have done you would have seen the wording 'align its groove'. Nowhere does it say circle or indentation.

I think Martin is just expressing the frustration that I assume a lot of us are starting to feel whilst trying to help you mate, that's all.

Honestly- everything you need is in the Toyota service manual (the BGB), forget reading other on line guides etc...just use the book that Toyota wrote for us, and follow it to the letter. Honestly- it works :thumleft:

Had a few hours spare today as my parents had the little lad for a while, so I cracked on.
Fitted the new tensioner and idler pulleys, turned crank over to 0deg Tdc then lined up the cams.
Bobbed on new belt, then with the help of a bungee cord attached to a swan neck spanner applied some tension to the tensioner pulley in order to pull the cambelt taught.

Anyway after 2 full revolutions of the crank back to my mark and all lines up \:D/ mark on crank and both inlet and exhaust marks all line up :thumleft:

I knew at that point things were going to well.
I then went to pull my allen key from the tensioner, started pulling and its not moving much if at all, then.Wollop the allen key is free  but no.
On closer inspection the bloody allen key had in fact sheared off and part of it was still in the tensioner.
So tensioner back off, compressed and remaining piece of allen key removed, new allen key inserted and tensioner refitted, this time managed to pull out a intact full but mullered allen key and tensioner is doing its job \:D/
So it appears I've managed to do my 1st timing belt after all, now its just a case of getting it all back together.

Well done...for future reference, if you put a spanner on the tensioner pulley you can push it back against the tensioner itself, which allows you to remove your allen key with mullering it :thumleft:

Doh!! #-o why didn't I think of that! Oh well I dont mind too much of sacrificing my allen key as long as i don't have to do that job again.

Cheers 2 mad!:thumleft: some of it went over my head initially, but got there eventually.
Shame I've got all the putting back to do as well(engine mount, camcover, throt body etc) but suppose i've broke back of the job.

Just want to jump in and drive it,hopefully with it behaving as it should with a bit of oomph!!!!

Errr :?: :?: :?: :?: possibly/definately maybe.

One things for certain is that with the alignment mark on the cams, if you had the inlet cam bang on 12oclock alligned with the mark the exhaust cam was off and from memory was clockwise/forward of being at the top.

Its all becoming a blur to be fair! cant remember if tame mechanic mate checked it and confirmed it was out when he popped by and I may have popped the belt off by that stage  8-[

I normally like working on my cars and have usually been ok, but this has been a tad traumatic for me.
And I have to confess that I do get stressed/anxious/depressed a bit more easily than most as I am on tablets from the doc for that.
