[Mk2 Turbo] Duff alternator, poss blown HG!!!

Post by Darkseed »

Hi All,

I have had my tubby for about 3 years now, but i am emigrating to the states soon so need to reluctantly part with it. I was asking £3500 for it until the alternator died, so i put it on e-bay for £2750 (i figured that should cover alternator cost and fitting etc.) A guy just north of me has agreed to buy and sent an AA guy round to check it out (who didn't even know what a turbo timer was and said the ignition off didn't work till i showed him the timer!!) and discovered that the HG might be blown (low coolant/oil and sludge in oil filler).

Does anyone have a rough cost of HG replacement?? as i will knock this off of the price of the car for the buyer. If anyone wants anymore info, e-mail me at [email protected] and i can send u the full spec of my car etc so that i can give the guy a fair price. If i had more time i would get it all fixed and then sell it, but need the cash for house payment over in the US of A!! Any advice would be appreciated.

I have told the buyer all the probs, so he is aware of them and i am providing him with loads of links, phone numbers, manuals & advice on where to get it done/who to use etc... - i have even sourced the guy 3 alternators at 3 different places. He is due to collect tomorrow, so quick response would be nice. Cheers guys - will log on when i get to the states and let all know what i have (prob another tubby mr2!!!) :D

I'd be looking at charging £200 plus parts to change the head gasket. However depending on how flat the head is, it might need a light skim.

You can tell him i'm only down the road from him...

bloody hell peter £200 labour on a tubby head gasket? are you sure mate? thats way too cheap...have you ever done a turbo gasket? its a major mission, most places wont do a turbo head gasket for under £600,toyota want £1000 plus!

Cracking price that mind, theres no way i could ever match that...i do mk1 head gaskets for £350 including the gasket/bolts/new filter/oil/anitfreeze/timing belt and head skim so it works out at around £180 actual labour,a turbo gasket is much much harder than a mk1 though, hats off to you if thats your price,i can send as many mk2 turbos down your way as you want for that money. =D>

Hi Paul. Thanks for your comments!

Done 4 in situ, and 3 or 4 N/As. As i said above, the £200 quoted does not include any parts or futher services that might be required. Actually, whether i just happen to be the right height, lol, i find them pretty easy.

I don't quote for parts purely because different people have different ideas. One for example will want the cambelt changed at the same time, others won't. I changed a sump gasket the other week and nearly got shot for assuming the guy would want new oil and filter. As he had had it done back in JANUARY, i got told to drain it, filter it and put it back in :?

Also, i am luck in that my workshops are on my residential premises which keeps my overheads down :D

Hi guys,

Just incase anyone near Kev @ S&M needs a head gasket replacing - he quotes £250 + Vat and that includes the head gasket.

Peter, i am gonna ring you sometime during the week to sort out a quote for a head gasket replacement on my tubby rev 2 and also an alternator replacement. Also, how much extra for the cambelt while the head is off etc???

darkseed does £250 plus vat also include the stretch bolts a head reface, fresh oil/filter,anitfreeze and a new timing belt? or just £250 plus vat with the gasket?
