Help!!! advice needed, error 34 and no ooomph!!!

Tested actuator for waste gate today, wastegate opens and closes ok
Hoping bit of lubrication at base of where the rod goes into the actuator has helped, now hoping it doesnt catch on inside of the downpipe.

New metal gasket for downpipe/wastegate junction fitted today also, getting the down pipe back on was a Pig! But got there.

Hot and cold pipes back on and all other bits and pieces, but by this time had gone dark.

Also somehow battery has gone a bit flat so its on charge at the mo.

Is it normal for these cars to have such a titchy battery? never seen one like it b4.

Next job is to whip Cam cover off and check timing marks if i find exhaust cam is out for instance, i then have to decide if I'm feeling brave enough to redo the cam belt

Got my compression tester today! think I will leave timing check and compression test till weekend.

Quick post in'case someone clever is on.

Got the cam cover off to check the timing, one thing i noticed is there seemed to be no gasket, I'm assuming this is not normal?

Is it normally a gasket you buy off the shelf or the liquid gasket kind?

There should be a gasket bud ... fitted one years ago .


Yeah toyota will sort you one .. think you do need some sealant in a certain place iirr

No wonder there is a bit of oil down the block if some turnip has put camcover back with no gasket

Im off back out after my brew to see if timing lines up, finding it very hard to see the markings at the bottom for the Crankshaft and those markings for 0deg top dead centre? and the 10deg marks.

I have ordered a Endoscope for this and for other future jobs, should allow me to look down into cylinders, into sills etc, gotta love ebay.

I take it you've removed the inspection panel? The crank mark isn't that difficult to see laid under the car and with the top panel out there's enough room to see the cams and pulleys

Not sure about this inspection cover? thought i had read about something like it, but i cant see one in the drivers side wheel arch?
What i can say for deffo is that if i turn the engine over so that I get the inlet and exhaust cams to line up with their notches facing 12 and meeting up with the mark on the case/block the marking on the crank pulley never lines up anywhere near TDC for cylinder one marking.


Also if i turn engine over(i have taken plugs out to make it easier) if i turn till notch of exhaust cam is spot on lined up, the inlet cam is almost lined up but slightly retarded, think this is fairly minor though compared with the fact that I can never get timing mark "0" if i have turned engine over till exhaust and inlet cams are lined up at 12 o clock.
Think this confirms my fears as to why the dizzy was at one end when we checked ignition timing.

Have you tried turning the crank round a further 360degs? The crank revolves twice for every single revolution of the cams.

the inspection panels are the pieces of metal either side of the engine cover on the top.

ignore the cam markings, if the crank is on it's timing mark and the cam's aren't then it's wrong try turning through another 360 but i doubt it will make any difference, in fact for the effort involved remove the belt and set it up yourself then you know it's right

Yup tried turning crank through 360 degrees and its still out.

Looks like its belt off and redo.

I am a bit nervous about doing it though, I've always had a bit of a fear of timing belts.
Guess I've come this far, maybe i should go the whole hog? suppose its a non interference engine so a bit less to worry about, and its not been running right but still went despite being wrong so what have I got to worry about right?

there must be a gasket on the cam cover, you sure its not tight up in the cover itself?
the whole gasket slides into a groove around the whole cover.

without a gasket oil would be everywhere id have thought.

It's really nothing to worry about, the tensioner is an auto unit so just remove it reset it, align the cams refit belt, release tensioner.

A spare pair of hands/eyes are useful to check the cams don't move whilst fitting the belt.

Whilst the belt is off it would be prudent to feel the idlers and water pump for any roughness/binding in their bearings

Once you realigned it, turn it over by hand (not on the starter) a good few times to make sure everything stays lined up and doesnt bang lol

As far as the apparent lack of a gasket, I will have to pop out to the garage and have a look and see if its hiding in the cam cover as Jim suggested, i hope so.

I'll have a go at this job tomoro, whats the worst that can happen
