Stainless exhaust.

Post by Heliwilly »

I am trying to organise getting a stainless exhaust for my wife's 1999 Toyota MR2 MK2. I have sent e-mails and a contact form to MIJ Exhausts in Walsall after reading good reports for them. So far after 5 days there has been no response to either my e-mail or contact form. Can't ring them as my hearing isn't too good. Has anyone had dealings with them? ADMIN, If this isn't the right forum please move it to the right one.
Thanks Bill W

IMO, it makes more sense and will work out cheaper, to buy an off the shelf, second hand exhaust for it.

That way, you know it is made of a decent grade of stainless, know how it will sound and know that it will fit.

I know you never asked for my opinion in that way, but I am giving it anyway.

The original exhaust rusted and was replaced by a twin box replacement from a !!!reputable MR2 supplier. To be frank, it is rubbish. Instead of the normal MR2 single back box, it consists of two smaller boxes, joined by a piece of what looks like an inch and a half pipe. It has the same fixing brackets etc as the original, and twin outputs. The problem is that because of the joining pipe between the boxes, when you start the car, the initial condensation only comes out of the output pipe nearest the input. There is slightly less output from the output pipe furthest from the input. I figured a custom made system in stainless would be a better option

NA or Turbo?

Mongoose do a full SS exhaust for the NA which is very similar to stock, there's a 2nd hand one for sale in the classifieds section at the moment. http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=184280 or new one from here: http://www.mr2-ben.co.uk/categories/view/exhaust

There is also a Fujitsubo exhaust for sale, these are Japanese made and very high quality http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=184101

all systems built that way will have more coming out of one side, even my fjustbo?(I really need to remember how to spell it) is built llike the standard one and does it but not to the same degree the japspeed one I removed

If you are in Hull head up the A1 to Newcastle have a good night out while the car is booked into AAS. They will do a fantastic quality exhaust, will sound and look exactly like you want.
It's not the cheapest or most expensive but they are the best in my experience and I've had my fair share of custom exhausts from different companies.

Always answers email promptly so will help with your hearing issue.

if a custom exhaust is what you want then ^^^ AAS are very good, had a bit of work done over the years there, outrun had an awesome rollcage made, alistair has a brilliant memory, some times I haven't been for 2 or more years and he always remembers my name.

he's not fond of mr2s though  , he'll do down pipe back but doesn't go near downpipes or CATS since a lad on here got him to make a decat and ended up taking hours longer because of snapped bolts in the turbo etc. This was many years ago like, around 2002/03, still brings it up aswell.

he doesn't like charging for the extra labour when stuff like that happens

always very busy with all kinds of race cars go through his workshop

Another AAS thumbs up. The guys there have the best reputation. Every single corvette owner in Britain that gets an exhaust made up... Goes there. It's nuts! A really top spec business though.

Im in Walsall and have only used them once before for a 4 wheel alignment, good service and very friendly. Can't vouch for their exhausts as I've not seen any they've made but they're always busy and have got some nice cars being worked on.

a friend of mine from work, from wigan, had MIJ build an exhaust for his jag s type R a few years ago, was good quality but not AAS standards. From memory he took it back after a month or so to get more/bigger silencers as it was too loud.
