I need to replace my clutch over the weekend and im wondering if anyone has an idiots guide or any tips?
Also its been slipping for about 5/6 months and then it finally gave out on wednesday... It smelt like it was on fire! Im thinking im gunna need to replace the flywheel aswell? Would anyone agree?
Any info on the replacement or advice will be most welcome!
Thanks
Drain the box first as you need to take out the drive shafts but make sure you can undo the fill plug first 24mm bolt iirc.
Get a cereal box and draw the bell housing on it so you can insert the bolts into the box in the corresponding area on the pic as the position it came out of if you see what I mean, as there are different sizes and lengths of bolts.
If you don't have impact wrench then you will be best off loosening the hub nuts with the wheels on with the car still on the ground.
I use a ratchet strap to raise the box back up to line it up to slot in. This makes it easier to get the angle and height just right.
You don't need to totally remove the slave cylinder, just unbolt it from the gearbox.
As for the flywheel chances are it will be covered in hot spots and glazed. It is possible to get it refaced (they have to remove the same amount of material from the friction ring and the outer ring otherwise it will affect the function of the clutch) but it would probably be easier to find one for sale from a breaker/member.
Probably more hints but off the top of my head can't think of any.
Oh spray the bolts for the rear tie bar and drop links a day or to before with penetrant. These will need to come undone to remove the drive shafts along with the 2 bolts that hold the ball joints on.
Oh replace the drive shaft seals.
Be very careful with the slave cylinder bolts there dead easy to strip tbe threads on, quite a few people replace the bolts with threaded bar, threadlock and secure the slave with nuts.
i tend to remove the drive shafts others just move them out the way, id recommend new seals for them either way. id also remove the flywheel and check the crank seal isn't weeping too.
Overall it's quite an easy clutch the do.
