I really like the Mk2 standard alloys, am i safe in assuming they are 15's

Also I noticed here and there speak of 14's did the standard alloys come in 14's on rev1's or earlier cars and then went upto 15 ?

Or are/were 14's for mk1's?

Anyone seen a site/thread anywhere showing the different types of wheels.

And what are the standard wheels called?

Oh and on a lightly different note, if we are referring to staggered wheels, what are we talking about and how do we achieve this and most importantly why would we want to do this?

Is it summat to do with toe in/out?/camber adjustment, and if so dont you scrub off part of your tyres sooner doing it.

Rev1 wheels were 14inch rev2+ were 15 inch.. They don't have a name as far as i'm aware.

Staggering is achieved by having a wider wheel/tire on the rear of the car. This gives the rear of the car more rubber on the ground which is required due to the weight characteristics of the MR2 being mid engined rear wheel drivethe weight is mostly towards the rear of the which under certain circumstances result in the rear of the car wanting to overtake the front.

no having wider rears on the car doesn't effect camber or toe in / out. All of that can be adjusted by a good geo anyway.



It is to help stop getting into a tank slapper when you are in a corner and decide to brake.

never brake through a corner at high speed in a MR2. it will kill you.!!

There were 3 types of stock wheel for the sw20

14's were rev1 only and will only fit rev1's later brakes are bigger
rev 2-4 had 15's with the big flat spokes
rev 5's had 15's with thinner spokes and different centre cap design.

Stagger refers to the rear wheels or tyre being wider than the fronts for fairly obvious reasons. Stock wheels ran a wider rear tyre, aftermarket people tend to run a wider wheel and tyre.

stock rev2+ wheels are 6x15 front and 7x15 rears, ET is either 42 or 45 I think? While the car might handle like a go kart on those sized wheels, try getting decent tyres in those sizes

Also the rev2/4 wheels are bloody heavy, the best compromise is a set of lightweight 16s.

That said is there a weight difference between the rev2+ wheels and the rev5 ones? I'm assuming there is because the mr2 challenge (or whatever its called now) people seem to want them?

So do Turbo's come from the factory already with a staggered set up? if so how is this achieved? summat to do with the hubs?

I am guessing its not just a case of factory fitted spigot rings.

114.3 is the PCD

Yes they do n/a's and turbos.. It is achieved as said before with wider wheels and tyres. the track of the car isn't actually any wider. it is simply wider tyres.

16's are definitely an improvement. 15's are fine, but there's a lot of sidewall flex. Great for all round compliance though!

I'm curious about improving traction from stock 15inch wheels with stock tyre fitment. I'm not into stance or lowering, just want minimal wheel spin and wheel hop. (Understand wheel hop could be due to worn mounts, bushings, braces etc)

And on another note.

With the TF, the tyre of choice is toyo T1R's and a lot of people will tell you that your TF will try and kill you with anything else than a matched set of 4 of these on.

Which I have (not saying i bought into this) but i got a good deal on 4 with alloys for 120 quid

But to be fair they did totally transform the car.
It is just so sure footed and planted with 4 toyo's all round.

Toyo T1R Proxes are alright, but by no means the best available! If you're paying that much, you may as well just get some Yokohama Neova AD08's - I've honestly never heard a word against them and have a set fitted ready for when my 2 is back on the road! Best Motoring have always used the Yokohama Neova range of tyres on their vehicle tests, and those guys can DRIVE

Alternatives I would say are Goodyear Eagle F1 and Bridgestone Potenza (although Turanza's have impressed me too).

Also you mentioned spigot rings - they're used to adapt the hub centre bore diameter to the centre bore diameter of the wheel mounting surface eg. 73.1mm to 60.1mm spigot rings are what I used to fit my Volk Rays Te37's on the MR2 (hub centre bore is 60.1mm, wheel centre bore is 73.1) These help to centre the wheel when mounting, and it is debated whether they have any further effect on handling/wheel vibration etc.

Ive got nexens on the back fn mine rev2 turbo and yokos on the front.

I think it handles very well though i have a track session booked at Japfest and i may find out how "grippy" they really are lol
