[Mk2] [Turbo] engine acting wierd

Post by shymirror »

Hello, i have an 92 mr2 taht has some problems,
the last couple of months i have problems with that if i gave the engine throttle more than a quarter pedal, the engine would loose it's power and would cough and and sound like it does not goes on all cylinders,
and shoot flames out of the exhaust and loud bangs comes from the exhaust, and lately it have gotten worse the day before the engine would not start, i could not even give it throttle to get up a small hill before the engine just cuts and cough,
yesterday my car would not start. the start motor would go around but the engine would not fire up.
have changed spark plugs,
have checked the distributor
also checked if the fuel flows to the fuelfilter.
and after we done all that we finally got start on the car. when i try to give it throttle smooth it will go up on the rpm's very well. but when i try to put the pedal to the floor the car just dies out.
anyone have any ideas of what it can be.
PLease ask if something i have wrote that is unclear.
PS.
was talking with another friend of mine, that since this car have a maf sensor it should not have an dumpvalve that dumpes the air out in the air?
but it should actually be a closed system?
and maybe that could be the problem?
can someone shed some light on that aswell for me.

May be a boost leak or a split hose. Check all intercooler pipes and all vacuum hoses. Is there any smoke coming from exhaust when it splutters? If its black then its overfuelling for some reason.

Also may be worth changing plug leads too.

ECU error codes?

If it is a Rev1 or Rev2 turbo, you should have a sealed induction system. If there are any leaks whatsoever between AFM and inlet manifold the engine will not run properly.

i would look around AFM and check for loose pipes and if the lead is in the AFM properly

Coil pack??
Not sure how to test it but a visual inspection once removed to see if it has cracks in it that let in moisture.
I suppose you could check the quality of the spark but that isn't under load so its subjective

I'd check the coil too :thumleft:

Do you know anyone with the same rev mr2 that you could borrow the coil to test it on you car ?

Update:
found out that the dump valve was just fastened with a ziptie so the dumpvalve was loose, removed the ziptie and i could remove the dumpvalve

it's a rev 2 turbo, i have ordered a new ssqv dump valve and a resirc kit for it. so hope that will make it something better

how do i check the ecu error codes?
will check the other things this mentioned here and check them

Open up the diagnostics port on the rear firewall next to the intake manifold. It's a small grey plastic box mounted on a plate together with the map-sensor...

Image

It even hasd 'diagnostic' written on it for your convenience

On the inside of the cap there should be a diagramm showwing you what pins are where on the connector hidden under the cap. Now take a paper clip and bend it open one end goes to pin Te1 (Testport 1) and the other goes to E1 (Earth 1). Now sit yourself in the drivers seat and turn the ignition key to on (do not start the car) and take note of how the cel flashes.

A constant fast interval flashing means there is no code stored. Slower flash intervals will flash out a number (or numbers). For example:

- - - - long pause - - longer pause - - - - long pause - - longer pause and
so on would be code 42. If there are more than one code stored they will be flashed back to back. So if we have codes 42 and 23 stored the following will be flashed:
- - - - long pause - - longer pause - - long pause - - - longer pause - - - -
long pause - - longer pause - - long pause - - - longer pause and so on.
I hope that is clear? Otherwise just google mr2 bgb mechanical and find the part on EFI

sorry for late answer,

finally got the engine started yesterday, after i switched dump valve and fitted a resirc to the air intake pipe, i also changed the Air Intake Pipe because my old rubber pipe was cracked, and after i did that the car ran almost perfect, for a couple of runs, and then i went inside the house to eat, and got outside again to drive a little, but then it went back to the problems i had originally, that when i gave more than quarter throttle it would cough... and shoot flames and loud bangs from the exhaust

and today i got the ecu error code, but did not get any wiser there since the only code i got was

Code: 43
System: Starter Signal
Diagnosis: No STA Signal to ecu unit engine speed reaches 800rpm with vehicle not moving

so to recap what i have done to this point
-changed sparkplugs
-checked the distributor
-checked if fuel flows to the fuelfilter
-changed dumpvalve and fitted a resirc hose to the intake pipe
-changed the Air Intake Pipe since it was cracked

anybody have more ideas of what it could be?
