Radio wires 1991 - MESS

Post by Bumble-bee »

Hi guys so yeah I got a navsure headunit had it in for a few months and it's worked perfectly :) and today I went to change the speakers and also sort out this aerial fault I have (It doesn't come up) and I pull the head unit out to see only what can be described as a mess :') wires upon wires of uselessness!! Once I attacted the new speakers they worked fine for about 5-10 minutes and then all of a sudden it turned off and on constantly so I decided to takes further look into these wires

So I looked at the how to thing that can be found on Google and it helped a little i eliminated a few wires but I still had these phono leads (for the speakers front and rear) where I presumed I should just have the normal wires with a plug to go with the other one so I decided to buy my own plug and just match the wires for the speakers to the other cables in the back of the HU instead of the phonos... So yeah I managed to get it to stop shorting and the HU worked however no matter what combination I make of these speaker cables the fronts just don't come on at all!! (I don't have rear... Yet) so I've spent all day trying to find out what is causing this problem and if I should just have phonos to the others in the back but then it just shorts again.... Any help on this will be amazing... Besides that problem I also have the aerial cable P.Cntr - blue and white - I put that to the constant power cable on its own the aerial comes up so I know it's not broken (it stays up when the engine is off to) and I want it to go down when it's off I don't care if it stays up while I'm on cd or aux, but with it attached to the power the radio again keeps cutting out constantly so I can't do that - where else can I put the P. Cntr cable so the radio doesn't keep turning off or the aerial doesn't stay up? Alone with actually getting the speakers to work without that same issue?!? I'm fed up been messing around with this mess for 8 hours straight!

Anyone who's experien any of these problems and can help I'll love you for ever!! But I know it's not the speakers because they worked and then something made the radio not work! But whenever I pull the actual aerial out of the hu is doesn't even turn on.... Got major issues and it's just a mess so yeah please help?!? Someone :')

Thanks

Anthony

Which system do you have, active or not? (any subs behind the seats?)

That doesn't answer the question.

As standard mr2's had one of three possibe systems....

-passive (no subs behind seat (cubby box instead), no amps)

-active (sub behind one seat (cubby box behind other), 2 amps)

-active premium (sub behind both seats, 3 amps)

...i suspect you have one of the active systems, which use RCA's, thus you've disconneted your amps (speakers are connected to amp not headunit) hence no sound!

Yeah I have the active system in that case!! Ok so where can I find the amp? Because the speakers I put in must be over powering it causing it to cut out and turn the hu off right? Or wrong?

The stereo switching on and off like that can be symptomatic of a very low or drained battery - if you have been working on the car for a while with the doors open and the light in the door on this will cause the problem after awhile - look at your instrument lights in the binnacle and see if they dim down at the same time the stereo drops out.

amps are in the rear side panels

i don't think thats likely tbh....could be a bad earth at headunit as i had that issue when retrofitting the active system to my car and it caused similar issues. but thats a shot in the dark guess at best.
