Mk2 Rev3 Turbo Rear Passenger CV joint boot replacement (ABS hub)

Post by rob6539 »

Hi Guys,

I've noticed that my rear passenger side CV joint boot has developed a small hole and is gradually flinging grease around the inside of the wheel. Obviously I’d prefer to keep all the grease around the CV joint, so will be looking to replace the boot in the near future and wanted to get some advice from anyone who has done this job as to the best way to go about it and any potential problems I may have.

I’ve heard from someone on an unrelated topic that the drive shafts can be difficult to remove from the hub.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all

Straightforward job if you have a good tool kit and a strong bench and vice.

90% of driveshafts pull out of the hub with virtually no effort.

Cheers Peter

So from what you're saying, am I right to assume that I'll be taking the drive shaft out of the gearbox (still attached to the hub) and then freeing it from the hub on my work bench?

If so, best start tidying my bench of crap.

Thanks again :D

You could try it that way, but you absolutely want to try undoing the hub nut with suitable tools whilst the hub is on the car and you can put a wheel on and the weight of the car on the wheel.

Rather than try and remove drive shaft on the bench I'd be inclined to put the hub nut back on the last few threads and drive it out with a few blows from a heavy mallet, obviously once most of the other suspension is free'd up.
