Idle bouncing and now idling at 2500 revs?

Post by 0233winch »

Hi there guys. I havnt been on for awhile apologies. But i know you guys are the best so i was wondering if you could give me some advice.

So.. one day last week my mr2 mk1 started off by having a bouncing idle, but ran fine in all the other gears.

Then when i started her yesterday she was idling at a constant 2500 revs which made me panic.

I am now wondering if this problem has occurred because of me changing the coolant incorrectly a few weeks ago. ??

Any ideas ? very much appreciated. Regards

A cold idle of 2500rpm is not uncommon, you don't say if the engine was hot or cold?

Bouncing idle is a symptom of air in the coolant which airlocks the waxstat valve, a simple rebleed fixes that, or it could be the waxstat is seized which is also common.

Is the car getting up to temp normally? Or is it still showing low temp after 20 mins driving?

As said above, make sure its bled properly, this took me about 4 attempts before I got all the air out.

thanks guys it was the coolant sorted it today, i also realized id put the hoses going into the expansion cap the wrong way aeound, so the pump was pushing the water out instead of around the system silly me. that will teach me to clean her !
