Fog lights

Post by Jaz-MR21991 »

Hey I'm removing my fog lights because I want to tint them yellow and also one has cracked glass so I will replace that one.

Because mine are the ones that move with the steering do I need to be careful of anything or can I remove it as normal ??

Thanks

I think you need to be careful driving as I believe that yellow fogs are illegal in the uk

Fogs

Post by cosmos »

Good Luck………….

Seriously the two per fog M5x20mm long screws are Always a problem getting them out which usually ends up by drilling. Stainless steel replacements with hex heads were my choice.

Are you sure? Mine are yellow from stock and I think it's a good look. In over 24years nothing had been said. The only fog light related MOT failure was on a relay a couple years back. Quite a few older European cars have come equipped with yellow fogs over the years...

Apparently white or yellow is fine for front fogs.

I believe its driving with them switched on in place of having the headlights on that can get you a ticket. Yellow or clear lenses are fine for the M.O.T.

I was reading on a police forum that apparently there's a bit of a trend of people running their fog lights trying to imitate daytime running lights on fancier cars.

An easy ticket and a bit of a pet peeve for some of them it would seem.

It's driving with fogs on when there's no fog that's the fail if I recall (sure a copper told me years ago you're not supposed to have drivers lamps on when the street is lit either but that was a while ago).

...I don't think anyone's checking much these days -too difficult these days though it seems mostly honda / boy racers who have fog or drivers lamps on. Lots of cars also have fogs / drivers lights on that side turn on when the indicators switch-on. I thought it was only JDM cars like my Nissan had turning lamps and they should have been removed at time of import, whatever, much better to drive with something on IMO.

Forget the look though. Have you tried yellow fogs before? I think it's down to the individual but yellow is useless for me. Most folk I've met have stuck with blue / white, or modified stock lamps back from yellow.

I did some more reading and if you have steering fogs they must be yellow or white. If they're static there's not any actual legislation for what colour they are which explains why some are blue, etc.

Fogs are only supposed to be used when visibility is 100m or less [fog, heavy rain, firework displays gone wild] and must be turned off when it improves again.

Having them on at any other time unless your car has auto fogs [some volvos for example] is a ticketable offence depending on the discretion of the officer. They're not impressed if you've got them on for show [duh] or you don't know where your fog switch is to turn them off either apparently.

Headlights don't need to be on if your driving fully lit roads with a speed limit of 30mph or less but I don't think that's a great habit to get into given how blind some other road users are even when you have them on.

We've had pretty grey weather added to with debris / dust fog recently. Some folk use fogs (usually rear) even if vis is 3miles plus, others choose not to use any lights at all. The no lights cars blend into the scenery anyway, I think just do what you want. Nobody will check.

I find my stock headlights to be pathetic and usually double up with my fogs aswel to improve visibility as they're a lot brighter and I feel more confident driving as a result. Being so low I can imagine they're not as annoying as the Chelsea tractors that regularly blind me with their creeds or leds.

I was less than impressed with the stock headlights the first time I hit an unlit country road & plan to put these in when it comes back from the garage.

A lot of modern cars, UK registered have these as standard/optional extra. Such as the Renault Clio. So I'm pretty sure it's not illegal to have the steering fogs.

These are the bulbs I went for. Massive improvement over standard ones. I've always fitted these to my cars. They are more white than yellow. My only input would be to get the 'OSRAM Night Breaker Plus' as the life on them lasts longer than the standard ones.

a lot of talk about law here haha,

luckily my mr2 is my weekend/summer car so I'm tinting yellow jus because I like the look :) good to know about the law though.

I used to roll about in my saxo vtr with fogs on just because I thought I was cool. I got pulled over and the officer said 'you just have them on because you think they look cool don't you', my reply was 'NO..BUT..ITS... yeah I think I look cool' haha good times

You're correct, steering fogs are not illegal. What is illegal is having anything other than yellow or white bulbs in them.

Re: the Osram bulbs, their website says the plus replaced the standard nightbreaker and the unlimited have replaced the plus.

I don't know if the Unlimited last longer, shorter or the same as the Plus but they are supposed to be an improvement on them.
