Just about to buy a Turbo....

Post by Tonberry »

Test drove a 94' Rev 3 this evening.

The temperature guage sat at approximately 85 degrees and didn't reach half way. Possible thermostat or is this normal?

The car seemed to want to idle at 950-1000 rpm once warm, is this normal? It also seemed to flutter very slightly.

The car was once on coilovers and has been returned to stock and is running 17 inch wheels. The ride was a little 'bumpy', is this about right?

This is the only one I've driven so far.

Thanks

On both tubbys ive owned, Temp guage needle sat at about 1mm below half way and only took a couple of minutes to get there. So if it takes a while or stays low then the thermostat probably needs changing.

The fluttering seems odd, any smoke?, check for boost leak?

Mr2's not the most comfortable car to drive the ride is a little bumpy. Just listen for knocks and check the rebound.

My tubby has always sat a few mm below halfway and never moves once it is up to temperature.

The ride is on the side of firm even more so on coilovers.

Idle should be a little lower when fully warmed up.

I've never found the ride on 17s very good, mainly due to the extra unsprung mass and the reduced amount of sidewall needed to fit.

Yep, running 17s removes the finesse and feeling of the chassis IMO. Much better on 16s with more sidewall.

I have 18s on my car and did 2000 miles round trip last year through the pyranees and not once did I think it was too harsh a ride.

Each to their own I guess.

Indeed. I just found the chassis numb with 17s. Much more communicative with 16s.

I never realy found it numb, but you could definitely notice changes even from just driving off. Swapping from lightweight 16s to a heavier split 17s the extra heft in the steering was noticeable.

The car would tramline more and the ride definitely had a harsher edge to it.

There is a b road local to me which has sections that are pretty bumpy, one part in particular is a downhill corner which is very bumpy on the entrance. Under braking with the 16s the car just about copes with it, with the 17s the dampers just cant cope with the extra mass and you realy feel the front wheels start to skip over the surface a bit.

One advantage is that the smaller sidewall gives the car better initial turn in response due to less flex and you do get a bigger tyre selection than 16's. Although who cares when AD08s and R1Rs are available in 16 inch sizes anyway!

Cheers for the input guys.

Sadly it sold before I picked it up - teach me not to leave a deposit.

I'm struggling to find a decent REV 3 T Bar. Anyone care to sell me theirs?!

That's the plan exactly. Sadly there is a lot of crud for sale.

I've been looking for 4 months!

Idle does seem a bit high... unless you had other electrics turned on.

It took me nearly a year to find my first 94 rev3 tbar tubby back in 2001 (now in the for sale forum).

It took me about 8 months to find my 2nd 94 rev3 tbar tubby which I got last year by chance.

Good ones are getting harder to find as more and more get scrapped.
Good luck with your search.

Just not worth it anymore unless you plan to keep the car forever, resale value this side of the sea is so low in comparison to what you'll pay for an import now :(

That said- if I was after a mint rev5 that I planned to take to the grave with me then I'd still consider it

agreed, but I don't look at cars as an investment, its a toy that I accept will never recoup the money I spend on it.. it's more important to have one in the condition I want.. the way I look at it is that you either pay up front for a good one or buy a rough one and end up spending the same getting it how you want it - either way you'll probably spend the same in the end
