A major rattle/knock is normally a big end.

Did the AA man not make any suggestions?
We're 100s of miles away, he was there!

In theory yes.

You can certainly assess damage in situ.

So what extra damage am i looking for?
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] yay
If you've done a big end it depends- if the bearing has broken up you may have damaged the crank journal
(scored, or oval), then you may have secondary damage from the parts of bearing shell in the oil- although the oil filter should stop most of it from being pumped round the engine, so probably ok.
.
.
.main risk will be damage to the crank journal, and possibly the con rod
(but less likely).

If the bearing is in tact is should probably just be a case of a new set of replacement bearings, but I would be checking the rest of the big end bearings while you're at it.

Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] yay
with the extra power im running will i need uprated bearings or will standard one be fine
Re: [Mk2] [Turbo] yay
Your choice.

.

"Uprated" bearings tend to be made of a softer material, the idea being that if something does go wrong in the engine then the bearing material will go first to try and prevent damage to other, more expensive parts.

Some people swear by standard bearings, I've always tried to use the ACL Race series bearings for the reasons above

As Ash says, you need to assess any damage to the crankshaft journal and the conrod big end.

The journal surface needs to be perfectly round, completely unmarked and smooth surface finish.

To assess properly, you will need specilaist measuring equipment.

Whilst it is possible to do in situ, we would without doubt remove the engine.
