I have heard of one that did nearly 400k no joke.
I fit's well looked after and driven sensibly then they do last. motorway miles are less stressful on an engine and therefore less wear but you also have to consider (if 2nd hand) how good it's been driven and loved in the past.
but hey.
if the engine goes caput....then just plonk another in.

I heard of one well over 200k a few years ago but I don't know what condition it was in. All I can say is mines 145k so far and making me grin from ear to ear everyday! :D

I'd be interested to know who has the highest mileage car on here and how they find it?

Ricey155, you have 149K and still running sweet, can anyone here top that!?

155000 and still running sweet :P

ok, ok, the rest of the car (including the gearbox) isn't, but the engine is so willing, holds 0W40 no problem, and just keeps pulling on trackdays. Shame that car will probably get scrapped because of the bodywork... :(

278K and I only broke it as the body was too expensive for the MOT...running sweet and unichipped at the time.

so it's not running anymore, then, is it?

Mine's about to pass 184 000 miles and running great.

actually i tried to gauge the mileage i could get out of petrol if i drive gently. on this last tank, i went 316 miles before refilling, and i could only fit 31.31 litres in the tank. this works out to about 45 mpg. sounds impossible, so i'm trying again this tank...

even if i could have fit another 4 litres in, it would be 40 mpg.

sounds like a solid car for 184 000 miles...

 And I thought I did well this weekend getting 271miles from a tank full before the warning light came on on my 146k miler!

Actually, the 316 miles you got from yours Milothicus, was that before the warning light came on or inc the mileage driven once the warning light was on?

For my experiment this weekend, when the empty warning light came on during Friday, I filled her up to the brim and got 32.29 litres in her. By the time the warning light came on again I'd done 271miles so if my maths are correct  32.29 litres equals 7.1 gallons, so 271 divided by 7.1 equals..........38mpg! :D Which I was very happy with considering she's 17 years old with 146k on the clock. And this was achived with at leats 90% of the milage on the M6 driving at an average of 75mph, so I don't think I've got a chance of pushing it up the the 316 miles you managed to achive :( Well done tho!

mine is on 175000 coming up to 176000.
doesn't use oil, body work in good condition (still needs work).
on original engine & gearbox.
has no 5th gear pop out.
basically it keeps going and going and going.
putting 10,000 on it a year roughly and it has been ultra reliable.
just keep up with the servicing!
I am going to live forever, or die trying!

this was purely motorway driving, 70 miles a day, trying as hard as i could to keep that TVIS closed, and start moving from stoplights as if i was in our 1.5l 4 door automatic Civic saloon (read: very slowly).

i think i opened the TVIS this morning once or twice, but i'll see what kind of mileage i get anyway...

Yeah, on my trip the TVIS was probably opened, at most, a dozen times to overtake or on slip roads. TVIS, I find, annihilates the fuel ecconomy!!!!

There's a duel carraige way near mine which I occasionaly go for a SERIOUS burn down for fun \:D/ a few great roundabouts and long straights and I'd have the TVIS fully open 99% of the time. Fantastic Fun! \:D/ BUT....... if I TVIS it all the way, which I always do, I find this 10 mile round trip uses almost 1/8th of a tank up! I did some rough calcs the other night and I reckon I was getting, at best, 9mpg!!

I know this sounds odd but which 1/8 of a tank does it use? ;)

I've found that the fuel guage on the mk1 is far from linear and tends to drop more rapidly the closer to empty it gets. I've been known to get as much mileage out of the first 1/4 tank as I do out of the rest combined without any real change in driving style.

When I picked up the car a couple of weeks ago I only put in enough fuel to get me home - about 10L, but I was really surprised to see just how quickly the needle headed south!

That's an excellent point! You're dead right, I hadn't thought of that!

I've only had my car for about 6 weeks and those 'SERIOUS burns' I mentioned where prior to this weekend just gone. This weekend was the very first time I'd taken it for a long run and the first time I'd ever filled it up to the MAX. I'd only ever half filled it before.

And like you say, the first 1/4 of the tank seems to last forever and after that the needle starts to plummet alarmingly! This weekend I ran 2 full tankfulls through (which aint cheap at moment! ) and I noticed that I was getting roughly 100miles from the first 1/4, 70miles from the 2nd, 60 from the 3rd and then only about 40miles from the final quater. And those 'SERIOUS burns' I mentioned were all done with only around 1/4 of a tank in it. So that explains why my maths was giving me an alarming 9mpg because I assumed each 1/4 of a tank would be identical.

Hmmmmmmm..... may use the TVIS a bit more on the way home now

On this point, i drove over to my mates the other night just as the fuel warning light came on. It is only 20 miles back but i wasn't sure how far you can get until it runs dry. The thing that was worrying me was that the needle was on empty, or even slightly less if that is possible :?

I suppose that the guages may differ from car to car as they get older but they are Japanese after all so i would expect 100% accuracy

The fuel guage is incredibly conservative and not very accurate i'm afraid. When the light comes on there is generally a good 9litres left in the tank (or 2 gallons in oldspeak). Its mainly due to the shape of the tank ie its long and thin, plus the fact that the float doesn't go anywhere near the bottom of the tank. I have done 60miles with the light on before, though the sure way to tell you should think about re-filling is when the light is on full bright and it doesn't dim when you go round left hand corners! Then you know you are getting close-ish.

I often use this method of knowing when to fill up!

as for dragging sludge up, i honestly wouldn't worry, when we took out my old fuel tank after 136000miles there was not a grain of dirt on the pick up pipe for the pump. In fact it was so clean it looked brand new.

refilled again today, 8.45 litres to 81 miles. assuming 4.68 l/gallon, that's about 45 mpg again.

being the ignorant canadian, you are using UK gallons, right? this is about 37 mpg(US). might explain my high numbers.

i'm absolutely sure of the litre measurement this time. i couldn't possibly fit any more petrol in that tank...

how far off can the tripmeter be?
