EMS Powered Harness Bar in mk2

Post by juliankv73 »

Hey

Just seen this on a car during my trawl of the net for harness mounting points.

Image Image

The EMS Powered Harness bar (safer!)

The EMS powered Harness bar uses the coat hooks (not like above!) to stabilise the harness bar.

Is it safe to use these points to stabilise a harness bar as Im worried that the forces in a crash would rip these out, making the bar and your harnesses useless

The EMS bar mounting to these points for stability but also mounted to the seatbelt mountings too :-k

i'm looking for options on mounting harness' too, everybody goes on about harness bars etc but i simply don't have the room, plus, the seatbelt is only held in by 1 bolt (at the top i mean) so surely can't be that bad??

That surely can't be safe. That bolt is only meant to hook up coats, so surely can't withstand the stresses and strains from a harness?! :-k

Possibly, but going off the common sense that most people lack theses days it's hard to say

Would the best way not be spreader plates onto the firewall for eyelets? I've heard a few horror stories of harness bars bending under impact.

If you dont have room for a harness bar why do you need a harness? #-o

Seatbelts

Post by cosmos »

Seat belt fixing…..coat hook! not to mention it is next to an glass screen orafice, one screw m6 in shear?

Volvo invented the seatbelt and kindly allowed other manufacturers to replicate this standard tested device, to this day seatbelt fixings are 7/16" UNF threads because to change this standard would involve costly testing all over again.

SBA, seat belt anchorage involves hydraulic actuators pulling on body blocks to simulate forces that are achieved and held for a set period to check for strength and panel deformation.

I actually have a harness bar bit like an EMS one that I bought from an imoc member Rustyracing thru ebay.

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... ht=harness

Mine uses bottom, pillar mount points but doesnt have the brackets that Ive seen stabilised by the coat hook bolt.

Mine isnt secured by the coat hook  , I was just wondering on the merits of having this as an extra stabilising point and having tubular section mounting to this in addition to :-k

The harnesses that are in my car are bolted through the bulkhead behind the seats. I say are because the nuts are a right pain to get to and I've never actually removed them, they are still behind the bulkhead carpet! I think that should be a pretty strong mounting.

Mine has eyelets mounted in the rear bulkhead too, with spreader plates.

Hi Guys, Thanks for the replies.

I guess I should have made it a bit clearer lol

I have a harness bar, but it doesn't use the coat hooks as an additional stabilizing point, like on the EMS Powered harness bar

Hence, Ive never fitted it and it sits in my loft!

I dont really want to drill into the firewall if I dont have to.

But if thats the only way, then I will buy the spreader plates etc and mount properly

Does anyone know how good the EMS Harness bar is?

And anyone know where I can get an EMS Powered Harness Bar?? :-k

Is this for road use or racing?
If racing then how you fit them is in the blue book.

I've got one fitted and it's fine if you use it the way it was intended.

The belts should loop over the top, then down to the floor where they can be secured with an eye bolt and spreader plate in the floor. The point is that when needed the force of the belt is horizontal at the drivers shoulders, but the force is taken at the floor - this also means the belt is forcing the bar down onto its mounts.

Do not just attach the belts to the bar - definitely not safe. Also, if attaching to the firewall make sure there's a big plate on the other side - in a crash there will be a couple of tonnes of force on the belts....

Had mine scrutineered for TSS for 2 years and they were very happy with it.

the only issue is stopping the belts moving around over the bar - I put p-clips on to guide them where I wanted them to be.
