Just a quick question

Post by mr2run »

Hello. I am negotiating with a seller about the possibility of buying a Mr2 turbo. Now the model is a tbar model and personally I have no experience with T-bars.

So I asked him the following question:

Also have you had any issues with the t bar leaking or anything like that?

And he replied:

T bar does let in a few drops of water if its raining hard but I think they all leak to varying degrees!

Would you agree with his answer or could this be a potential issue?

Thanks in advance.

First things first... give you thread a useful title!!

It's a while since I had a TBar that didn't leak. There are things you can do but given the age of most of these cars, you're be hard pressed to find one that's got a perfect seal. There is plenty of information out there on how to improve the situation though. I wouldn't let that put you off the car if it is a good one :thumleft:

Whilst owners use clingfilm, silicone sealant, sellotape, chewing gum and anything else they find that costs nothing, bottom line unfortunately is that it's going to cost money to return the car to it's original leak-free condition.

First ensure the windows haven't shifted slighlty over the years. Adjustment procedure is in the BGB.

Second, eccentric rod guides can cure the most minor of leaks. Cheap, and easy to fit.

Thirdly, it's new body and glass seals. Around £150 and £70 respectively.

If you think its really going to bother you and you store the car outside, I personaly would budget for new seals you can also adjust the windows to run a little higher or tilt more inward for that sweet spot between water tigtht seal and being able to close the door fist time!

Hi i did the cling film & sealant fix on my 22 year old T-Bar, it only lets in a drop when it has a pressure washer directly on it, at the hand car wash, (when i am too lazy to wash to myself)

Marks (Shinny) old Rev5 Tbar, My son owns it (wilki) it leaked in one spot, passenger side at the back, it filled the foot well up.

After drying it out thoroughly, we put a piece of blue tac on the end as a temporary measure until we had time to do the same fix as mine, well that was last year, and we've been through the rest of the winter & the summer now into its second winter with the custom blue tac, and its still fine!

as peter mentioned check the window alignment, i know mimes out a little

It's already been said by the others and I agree entirely.

But just as the cures are listed you can also go some way to prevent or limit any issues by taking the T-Bar glass out twice a year washing the rubbers, removing any debris or stored dirt and letting them dry out naturally which allows them to return to shape as well.

When they are completely dry, treat the rubbers with some wax based compound such as shoe dubbing which keeps the rubber supple and moist and then when it's absorbed give a quick buff with a dry cloth. The difference is impressive and the reactivated rubber seals far better.

I hope that helps, I'm just off to make myself supple and moist. :D

Rod guides, then if that doesn't work, new T bar seals/glass panel seals would be the only option I'd go for.

Thanks for the replies.

I have spoken to the seller and he says that the only leak if from the passenger rear.

I have seen a guide with the sealant fix and I am confident that this should fix the problem.

Cheaper with postage included? How much cheaper?

That's great advice. Thank you so much.

This issue was slightly putting me off buying the car but I think I now I feel a lot more happier.

I just siliconed my roof on never take it off anyway and not a single drip comes in. To be fair tho I have not carpets & have removed the bungs out the floor under the seats so didn't fill the car up with water at least now I can pressure wash the inside :thumleft:

Yep, agreed. Just bought all new seals for my T bar and it was cheaper to buy from US.

This is the 4 pieces for the roof. 2 glass panel seals and 2 T bar apperture/door seals.

I can't recommend new seals or eccentric rod guides enough. sealant just looks manky. I had a rev3 T bar previously and it had sealant on the seals. Cheap bodge in my opinion.

Do you mind me asking how much you paid?

To order from the US, did you just order from Toyota Website and get them delivered here?
