new tyres

Post by superbrian0 »

HELP :( :(

I bought a 1993 MR2 tbar just last week unseen . The previous owner has been kind enough to offer to MOT the vehicle for me which he told me needs a new clutch and ONE tyre . As I never fit one tyre and always fit a matching pair I started to have a look around on the web
According to the seller the tyres on the car now are :
195 55 r15 FRONT
225 55 R15 91V REAR and its the rear one that needs replacing .
this information was a bit surprising as I thought the fronts should be 205 not 195 and I also thought that the profile should be 50 series and not 55 series .
I have read various opinions on this website and others and i am now more confused than when i started out :evil
As i see it these are my affordable options
1 buy two 225 50 15s
2 buy two allegedly standard 225 55 15s
3 buy two 225/45 15s
Q of these three options which is the best choice for grip/ handling /comfort
Alternativly I could dig out of storage in my garage two near new Pireli Pzeroes size 225 45 17s as I have noticed ( with no little interest ) that some pundits have 17" wheels on their own cars . If I go down this route I would of course have to buy two new/or ebay Mag wheels . This of course would be offset against the two "free" tyres

How would these changes affect life ...or indeed life expectancy if i keep
what ive got on the front .

Any helpful advice would be much appreciated

Kind regards Brian

Hi Brian, welcome to the forum
the correct sizes for standard 15" wheels are 195/55/15 front and 225/50/15 rear
many people change the front (as I have myself) for a 205/50/15 for a very slightly less understeery nature
you have a very limited choice if you want the same tyres all round, by limited I mean a choice of two - toyo t1r or falken 912
previously tried the toyos and now have the falkens fitted although I haven't driven the car yet on the falkens so can not offer an opinion on how they differ
all I can say is I found the toyos acceptable, though not a patch on the bridgestone s03's the car came with originally, cant buy them anymore unfortunately
