[Mk2] [Turbo] Ongoing troubleshooting to get the car firing up

Post by garym01 »

Hi All,

As you may know I am currently rebuilding a rev 3 turbo.

I had an issue in that the car would not start, discovered that the ignitor was missing completely. I have now installed the ignitor and it still will not start.

I did not replace the coil that came with the car so could be that. We are not getting a spark anywhere.

I have installed new HT Leads, Dizzy and arm, we can smell fuel and know fuel is been delivered.

We are getting error code 31 but not sure if that is because we have not connected up any water pipes or air filter system as yet.

I could purchase a replacement coil but wanted to post here first for ideas.

My other option is to spend a little cash on an auto sparky to diagnose further.

Thanks

There is a page in the manual on testing the coil if you provide me an email address over pm I will send you the whole thing then you can hopefully rule that out.

No problem anytime. Where did you order your coil if you don't mind me asking?

The coil should only be a Toyota one and be a Rev 3 one or it may well not work

Ok I now have replaced the ingnitor and coil and we have a spark at the plugs.

the car will still not fire up however.

I can smell fuel on the plugs and I have a new fuel filter in place as well as I know the pump is working.

we had a split fuel line and it was pumping fuel out so I know fuel is getting that far.

all the water system is disconnected and I get error 31 when checking.

Any ideas?

camskill do a coil for £34, i got one from my local parts place, it was a blueprint one and was £50. i would have got the camskill one had i not needed the coil that day. gave the guy the reg plate, correct coil arrived despite me worrying if it was gonna be the correct one or not.

EDIT: just to add to this, the ignitor from a non turbo works fine too. i was sent one in error, tried it on the car and it worked fine, it's been on the car over a year with no problems.

Does it sound like it's trying to fire? Not having an air filter shouldn't make much difference, is the intercooler pipework all connected up?

You need fuel, compression and spark to start an engine. If you've confirmed a good solid spark and have wet plugs then id be checking the compression and timing, both cam and ignition.

ITS ALIVE

So got the car fired up, engine sounds sweet, no knocks or lumps.

seems to be overfueling a little but will sort that.

So next is filling up the coolant, sort the brakes and replace brake/clutch fluid.

I think we have a winner.....

think it was just a couple of connecters not in correctly we disconnected bits and bobs and plugged it all back and it started up.

just in the process of filling the coolant and bleeding it up at the moment, then on the brakes and clutch so doing well today so far.

have noticed the rev counter not working so will investigate that later.
