Retractable Wing Mirros

Post by Shmed »

If a car has the retract button on the window controls, does that mean it definitely has retractable mirrors?

Is there a computer part that goes with them?

just have this niggling thought that if I rip out the wiring, then the car will never get out of the garage again.

It should have, but the owner could have put in a control unit with retract button into a car without retractable mirrors :D

There's a relay box that sits under the steering wheel too.

Assuming no parts have been swapped, then yes. Of course it's easy for someone to have swapped a control with the button onto a car without retracting mirrors!

The system is made up of:
Retracting motors in each mirror (7-pin connectors)
Control unit above driver's feet
Retract button on driver's window controls
Body wiring changes present in all JDM cars
Door loom changes only present in retracting cars (GT and G-Ltd)

Ah, thought there might be a computer somewhere. I think that the NA I was breaking had retractable mirrors but I didn't salvage the 'brain' :(

Is there any way I can tell from looking at the mirror itself?

Cheers Shinny, looks like the door looms would've been worth keeping too ](*,)

As I mentioned above, check for 7-pin connectors:

Mirror connectors:
3-pin: Remote adjustment only (Early UKDM & GT-S)
5-pin: Remote adjustment and heating (Late UKDM)
7-pin: Remote adjustment and retracting (GT & G-Ltd)

Are retractable mirrors worth much as a retro-fit (minus the brain and door looms...)?

Anywhere between £60-£100 depending on whether the mirror motors have been modded for retro fit.

It won't be any cheaper than £60 as that's probbly the rate for a ll the parts alone and if the morrors are decent it will push it up a bit more but as long as you have the parts the install is not too difficult for mechanically minded folk.
