Also not sure if its the same for all but I dont earn any NCD on my Classic Policy, only my main policy, cost has hovered around £180 mark for past 4 years mods are allowed.
Another stonking deal! down south again though

that's very interesting - I have certainly learned something there given the low level of premium paid, I suspect its not a bad trade off really...
Are there any more 'typical caveats' with CC insurance so far I think we have: age of car, access to another 'main' car, limited mileage, and no accumulation of NCB....
Is there any sort of guidelines as to how modified the car can be on these classic type policies? For example would they cover cosmetic and mild mechanical mods, or will they cover something that's been modified substantially, ie forged build, different turbo, ecu etc etc?

Seems like some do.... my limited experience is that provision for mods is one of the more sensitive parameters, varying wildly from one from insurer to insurer.
Never quite been clear on mods - presumably if you 'declare' them then the perceived risk and hence premium increases but then are the mods themselves also insured from theft or damage?

It will depend on the specific insurers and specific modification as to whether the price will increase.
In most cases, no, modifications are not covered but a handful of insurers (specialists) will cover the modifications on a like for like basis.
I pay 185 on a classic second car only policy with Allianz here in belfast. They have promised it will be cheaper still this year as it's 20 years old now.
For some reason Allianz won't sell it direct, only through a broker.
So who are the best companies to try for a quote on a modified one then? The car is 24yrs old so age should be ok.
Its a second car, hasn't been out of the garage for about 3 years, decided its time to get it on the road again!
The only company I know of that cover like-for like on mods is Sky. They've never been price competitive for me personally, but then I've had issues with both cheaper classic car insurance companies I've had policies with (Classicline and Peter Best)

I'm in my second year with performance direct. My car is street parked with the max allowed of 5k limited milage. It's a '90 rev1 so qualified as a classic no prob. It's a touch over £400 but considering my age, 26, and the fact it's street parked I'd say that's pretty good. I found them thru the money supermarket app. The only downside is you can't build a NCB while insured under them.
Fully comp with breakdown and legal cover of course!
Just had my renewal throufh from admiral. 615 quid on 6000 miles commuter policy.
Tried classic line and they refused to offer me a price as I don't own a second vehicle. Although I did say I was named on my.mums almera.
Wondering if I should transfer my mum's car to my ownership and working something out but that might impact my own dads classic policy on his landrover..

try carole nash, footman james, performance direct and flux direct, all are very cheap i've used carole nash for years on various classics i've had (including the mr2 the last time i insured it) they are usually the cheapest but this time were much more expensive than anyone else, you can get a quote online from carole nash too.
