Discussion and technical advice the SW20 MR2. 3S-GTE, 3S-GE, 3S-FE etc
Anything and everything to do with maintenance, modifications and electrical is in here for the Mk2.
I've got an unknown plate-type LSD in my rev3 turbo so I'm using Comma LS80W-90 which is specifically designed for gearboxes with plate LSDs and is less than half the price of the MT90 that everyone always bangs on about. I tried MT90 first but the LSD engaged so harshly and so noisily that I actually thought my suspension was loose!
What kind of LSD have you got?

I don't know I'm pretty sure it is a rev 4 n/a , I think that is the only n/a LSD gearbox available ? I'll have to look in the folder of paper work. It has a slight whine so thought I'd top it up if it needs it or maybe change oil completely.
Thanks for your replies guys
You tend to know if you have a plate LSD as you can feel them engage and disengage as you drive around.
A viscous diff is a sealed unit and doesn't share the gear oil. A helical diff shares the gear oil but its performance isn't significantly affected by it. A plate diff also shares the gear oil but its performance is affected by it. Assuming you've not got a plate diff, just get the grade correct and robert is your mother's brother!

Cheers mate. Just found a new unopened 1l bottle of Comma Gear Oil EP80W-90 GL4 would that be ok to top it up if need be for now ?
I must have bought it for the rev 2 n/a I've got but never used it.

Useful info - i ended up going with Cusco's own stuff which cost ~£75, which ended up all over the road when i sheared my d-shaft. Second/Third time round, I went for fuchs but never knew Comma did this!

My experience was exactly the same. Comma LS80W-90 GL5 all the way - and it's cheap too!
Just needs changing every 12 months as it's mineral oil but it's a good way to ensure the health of your (expensive) gearbox

Eventually managed to get the top up/fill plug out of the gearbox (well the M.O.T. tester did ) with a hammer and chisel to loosen it and ...........it was full of nice clean oil !
Oh.........passed M.O.T. too
Cheers guys
