[Mk2] [Turbo] HELP!! Car wont run!

Post by markstevieandmads »

Having a bit of a nightmare with my turbo rev 2.

Drove it around time, all was well. Gave it some beans here and there but nothing too OTT.
Stopped a few times after various mates and all sopped and started fine,

Im about 500 yards from home and come down the ramp and I just lose power. No lights that I notice flash up on the dash.
I coast over to the side of the road and stop. Engine dies.

And from now on, I try and start the car and it just turns over. No attempt to start. Battery is fine, and it seems it has good compression as turning over well but just not "catching".

I pushed it home and this is where it stands.

Where do I start looking?

Ive had the bonnet up and all the connections and hoses seem ok with no leaks.
Ive checked the IGN fuses in the engine bay and all ok.
Immobiliser seems to be going off as it should (its got a viper on it and the light stops flashing when I disarm it so all this seems well).

It has fuel in the tank.

So, where do I start looking as im not good at fault finding!

Thanks in advance.

Have you checked for a spark, could be a coilpack.

I'm guessing a pull a spark plug with lead on it - leave it next to part of the engine like the cam cover and see it sparks on it?
Do I check each plug? And how do I check the king lead? Same way with a screwdriver?

Please bare with me as I'm not clued up with mechanical fault finding!

yep, just whip a lead off and see if it arcs to metal, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE INSULATED YOURSELF FIRST!!!

if no spark then i think you can check the coil with a multimeter - I wouldn't try grounding it.

take a look at page IG8 on here:

Hi check king lead of coil first. For the car to not even attempt to fire its bound to be coil / coil lead / ignitor / injector resistor pack / fuel pump related.

Check for spark.

1) check coil lead
2) check coil
3) check ignitor
4) check ecu ( swap ) but check for 12v at ecu also ( fuses all ok ?)

If you have spark..

Check for fuel

1) Check fuel in tank ( daft but has happened fuel sensor packs up )
2) Bridge fuel pump in diagnostic socket ( can you here pump )
3) Check resitor pack. Not likely to be all 4 injectors so pack is more likely

First question on any non-starter before getting any tools out... Have you got a CEL?

No cel.

I've tried bridging the diag for a fault code before (when I was fault finding before - and yes, I had no fuel doh!) But my diag plug looks corroded and the engine just made a grating sound when trying to turn before so I've got a feeling the diag is goosed.

The other thing I've noticed is when ignition is on (lights on dash) I can hear a sort of motor or pump whirring which sounds like its at the frunk end.its continuous when ignition is on and only stops when ignition is off. Its always done this even when running fine but I've always thought it didn't sound right.

I assume you've checked for 12V at all 3 engine bay fuses. (As opposed to just looking at the fuses).

OK, so now check the earths and lives into the ECU. Then earth pin5 of 22 pin plug (green/white) and see if cel lights up.

If it does, chances are ECU has died.

Thanks everyone for all your help.

I haven't had a chance to have a proper look - when it happened I just chucked it in my garage! I didnt really know where to start looking so I now got a good grasp of what to check first. Hopefully get a chance Tommorow to start checking.
Cheers guys - I really appreciate.

ImageUpdate
Checked fuses in engine bay and in frunk (2x fuse boxes) and all fuses OK.
Checked.for.12v at the engine bay fuses and getting 12v on all 3.

Turned ignition to on and cel light is lighting up OK. Tried the te1 and e1 link but cel light doesn't flash. My diag plug looks a bit corroded.

When I turn on ignition (not crank) I can hear like a pump running which goes off after about 1-2 mins.

Couldn't do anymore testing as my battery was flat so its charging now.

Is there any other fuses to check?

Also how do I check fuel is being pumped?

Got the top of.the cam belt cover undone and prised it open and from what I can see the cam belt is still in one piece though I can only see the top of it.

I've emailed 3s about maybe getting it there. I've also got my mechanic cousin coming tkmmorow.

Update 2

Took king lead out of dizzy cap and led it on a metal housing in the bay (its earthed as checked with meter).
No spark.

How do I check the next component which is the coil?

Short out FP and B+. That will run the pump continuously with ignition on.

Looking at YouTube vids it doesn't seem to have a cel light on my dash.
Here's a pic with ignition on above. It seems it should be underneath the handbrake light? ABS And PS both light up and go out.

I was going to short the w pin to ground to check if it comes on but I can't match up the ecu pin outs I find to my ecu wiring.

Its a rev 2 turbo.

Update 3

Took the lid of the ecu and found pin w. Shorted to ground and no cel.
Took the cluster out and found no bulb in cel so used the handbrake bulb. Turned on ignition but still no cel.
Shorted w pin on ecu to earth and turned on ignition with handbrake bulb in cel position and it lit up.

So I'm assuming the ecu is faulty? I've not got the ecu mounted on the back wall but all connectors are in it.

I've taken the ecu apart and from what I can see, I have 2 blown capacitors.

Now they look pretty easy to access and I'm confident at soldering so I could attempt to replace them. The only problem is I don't know what to order. Could I just take the ecu to maplins and point out the 2 I need? Or does anyone have an idea what I need to order.

On close inspection it says 50v 10uf 50v on both of them.is that all I need?

Also I know they need to be soldered in the right way round so how do I know which?

See this. I've got exact same problem with same components burnt out.
