Forum newbie - mr2 search about to start!

Post by paime »

Hey,

Thought i'd introduce myself to everyone and ask for some advice for my next mr2 purchase. My name's Paime and im from the north-east of Scotland. I used to own a rev2 N/A mr2 about 4 years ago but at the time i had to sell her. Im now looking to get another but want to do it properly this time and get myself a turbo but what should i be looking for - rev 2, 3, 4 or 5? Im looking to pick one up in Spring next year but im too excited not to start looking now!

Any help much appreciated!

Cheers :)

I saw that one on eBay as well i think? It's a nice looking car and if it was still around in 6 months time then i'd definitely be interested. As i said, i've probably been a bit premature with my searching by the thought of owning an mr2 again is making me giddy.

yeah it never sold, i'm actually thinking i might keep it. getting some mad cheap insurance quotes so it doesn't cost much to keep hold of it.

'Snail' as in turbo? Im 100% after a turbo. My previous MR2 was N/A which was fine but it hardly rocketed along like i wanted it to. If i manage to get my mits on a turbo it'll be a decent starting point for my ultimate goals.

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise?

Insurance is nowhere near what i thought it would be, even for an import. I used to drive an RS4 and the insurance was eye-watering. To think i can get similar performance for a fraction of the cost (insurance, tax, purchasing it, fuel, everything!) is pretty cool.

Looks like a good point at which to introduce myself. :D

My name's Graham, and I'm looking for one too.

I've always had big German machines, with old Astras to run back and forth to work.
When my last Astra died, I bought a mechanically mint one-owner, full history Corolla 1,6SR (2000my, facelift) and I absolutely love it!

Anyway, I had until recently a BMW840Ci. 4,4 litre steptronic V8. A magnificent Autobahn blaster, but a mechanical nightmare of complexity and terrifying repair costs. For example, in the history file is an invoice for replacing the windscreen wiper mechanism, and that alone was £1,100.

Driving it was great, but when you got home it felt like you'd been playing Russian roulette and had just clicked the hammer down on an empty chamber. There was a great feeling of relief that you'd got away with it yet again, but trepidation because you knew that each time that happened it got you one step nearer to the time when it would finally go wrong and rape your bank account.
Which kind of took all the fun out of it for me, so I sold it.

Luckily, I didn't lose a penny on the whole experience and I've decided to go for something that looks like a lot more fun and that will be nowhere near the horrifying upkeep costs of the 840. Hence my search for an MR2 Mk2 Turbo in the best order I can find for around my budget, which is yet to be decided.
I don't imagine insurance will be a worry being as I'm old. Even the BMW was only £268 a year on a classic policy.

From what I can gather, I'd like a Rev 5 Turbo with the T-Top. I'm not worried about the leaky roof issues as it'll be a summer car and will be covered when not in use.

Anything in particular I should be aware of, in addition to what's been posted above? Grateful for any advice or info on cars for sale.

Thanks Pete.

I've had a good browse through the buyer's guide and it was very helpful.

There are some crackingly good buys around for the regular 'vanilla' 2.0 GTi, but I get the feeling that I'd regret it if I went for one of those when I could have had the turbo.
