Tips for the perfect launch

Post by Odin_S »

I went to the Jap Show yesterday and my best time was a very embarrassing 14.007. I've only ever been on the strip once before and fluked one time of 12.8.

Any tips on the best launch? I hold the revs at around 3kRPM :) I have a 6 puk clutch, which was great, seem i need to get my reaction times down. Mine were in the region of .07xxx

reaction times dont count unless your in some sort of drag series??

so ignore how quick you react, just launch right. ive sat at the lights for 2seconds and still made a low 13 second pass.

i dont see how you could go from a 12.8 to a 14 in the same car :eye:
unless you fluffed the launch and every gear change. or youve lost a heap of pwoer somewhere.
was this 12.8 at santa pod too?

btw, if you had a reaction time of 0.07 then id say that was pretty awesome.

Yeah agreed :o

Buts suspect he means 0.7 which is in the ball park for most RWYB competitors.

Launching is always very tricky but I suspect in your case you may have a little too much wheel spin which is not always easy to gauge from inside the car. Were you feeding the clutch in or dumping it? The main thing to perfect launches is practice !

I was at Santa Pod yesterday (have the sunburn to prove it !) and was pleasently surprised by the number of MR2's. Shame the place still doesn't invest much of the gate in facilities.

yeh my last comment was tongue in cheek, lol
0.1 is the limit for reaction time in the olympic 100meter race! ha.

odin;
as said, 0.07, 0.7 or even 7seconds, it wouldnt have mattered as its not counted towards your time.

so i wouldnt be concerned about reaction times at all!

edit, be interested to hear how the mr2s did ??

My reaction times were around 00.7100.

I build the revs then dump, but realised thats not necessarily a good thing, got wheel spin.

Was so annoyed my brother in his 135i beat me  all because of wheel spin.

Yep all at santa pod. Call the 12.8 beginners luck because the more i thought about it the worse i got :/

arnt you on 16s?
id have thought youd be able to launch pretty well.

60ft times?
terminal speeds?

its very difficult to practice, because on the road surface is completely different to santa pod. id let the clutch out slower if spinning alot. or drop some pressure in the rear tyres.

as said, do not concern yourself with reaction times or who finishes the cross line first. as clock only starts once you leave the line, not when it goes green.

Be interested to see how each of these stats compare to your other time?

Those sort of terminal speeds I'd expect on a car running stockish power.
(Bare in mind stock gen3s have been known to go 13.1-13.3 in old jap vids, professional drivers obviously).Thou I assume day was very hot, but does seem odd to go from 12.8 to a 14.
Sure it wasn't a 13.8 you had before?

Anyway, it is fun at the drag strip!
Am sure you can improve on this next time, some better launches will see you in the 13s for sure.

This is going to sound very "Tokyo Drift" but you need to get a better feel for your car and what it's doing... the clutch, the rear wheels, what its limits are etc.

The pod is sticky. Personally, I hold 6k rpm, drop the clutch like a sack of potatoes. You don't wanna bog down. Good for a 12.9 on a stocker.

Didn't know you had it in you Steve! :-$

You never ran 12s with 100mph trap speeds. Maybe mid 13s.

Practice is the only way to get better. I like to slip the clutch a little on launch and feed the power in like you would on a two stroke dirt bike.

I find shoes with thin soles good too. They give you a better feeling through the pedals. I just wear a pair of plimsoll-like shoes that were £10 from Primark. There are "proper" driving shoes out there but be prepared to pay £50+ for them.
