Mk1b insurance for an 18-year-old?

Post by Rpm »

I'm hoping my mk1b will pass its MOT retest on Friday and she'll be back on the road after sitting in my garage since 1996.

I'm an old git, so insurance isn't an issue for me :D

But I'd like to get cover that allows me to add my 18-year-old-son on for the odd day here and there throughout the year.

I've called a couple of brokers and tried to get on-line quotes but it looks like noone will touch him at 18.

Has anyone had any better luck? Any brokers where I might stand a chance of getting cover?

Thanks

Rob

The risk is dictated by the 18 year old, even if only very occasional use. It's an insurance company's worst idea of a risk I'm afraid.

Try Adrian flux though, you never know!

When I first got my mk1a 9 years ago, many, many insurers wouldn't touch me as they said I had to be 21 to insure the car.

It may be worth checking how much he would pay for a policy in his name.

Father + son + sports car = high premium :thumleft:

I was in your son's position a while ago (it wasn't a sports though) and it was ridiculously cheaper to insure the car just by myself rather than with my dad.

I ended up insuring myself as a main driver and my girlfriend as a named driver which was actually cheaper than insuring myself only!
