[Mk2] [NA] Getting the Water pump housing out

Post by liamc »

Hi, I have a rev3 uk car and need to replace the o-ring between the water pump and the engine block as its weeping after I last replaced the water pump cover.

I've got all the bolts and the two nuts from the coolant bypass pipes off and can wiggle the housing a bit but it looks like its catching on the tinware behind the cam sprockets.

I think I'll need to remove the cam cover to hold the cams, then remove the cam sprockets to get to the bolts for the tinware.

Is this normal for a water pump change on one of these or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks
Liam

The pump housing should come right out, maybe some "gentle persuasion"?

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

After more trying I realised you do have to remove the exhaust cam sprocket to remove a bolt which will give you enoigh of a bend in the tinware to get the water pump housing out.

Getting that sprocket off needed an air impact gun.

So for the benifit of anyone searching how to change water pump, dont just remove the part that is the impeller, as there are bolts going through that into the engine block. Behind that is an o ring which will weep once disturbed. You need to remove the housing to change the o ring between the water pump housing and the engine block.

In short, the way the BGB shows is the only way to do the coolant pump.

Its a sod of a job, and you don't want to be doing it twice so I'd suggest using Toyota gaskets and o rings as they are different to the ones that come with a water pump from camskill.
