[Mk2] [NA] N/S/F suspension area problem.

Post by Nik_L »

Right, just picked up my new MR2 and its making a racket from the front passenger side area. Its like a bad knocking, metallic smashing noise. Its fine on super smooth surface, but bumps and dips its pretty bad.

Seller thought it was the drop link, and supplied a pair with the car. But i had a feel from underneath and i don't think its them, there's no play in them and you can't easily twist them.

When turning right and you hit a bump etc, its not as noisy. And randomly when you straighten up after turning left, it feels like its pulling to the left, but sorts itself out once you hit a bump.

Im going to strip it down, but want some advice on what parts to focus on most and how to check them.

Thanks.

It's possible it could still be drop links, you need the front jacked up and suspension hanging to do any accurate diagnosis. With the front up grab the wheel top and bottom and apply force as tho to rock too and throw, do this also side to side hands 3 and 9 o clock on the wheel. You're basically feeling for free play. If you have any, you need to repeat this test whilst putting a hand on all the major linkages such as bottom ball joint, drop link joints, track rod end. If there is no play in the joints other possiblities are wheel bearing, steering tie rods or drumsticks that come out of rack, or even suspension top mounts. If the drumsticks are worn out usually you'll see the rod move up and down when rocking wheel side to side. If the wheel bearing is at fault you'll rock the wheel and it'll feel like the wheel nuts are loose, as the wheel will move first before any suspension or steering joints. Top mounts are a little trickier to diagnose, youll need the car flat and a finger on the centre nut of the suspension leg from under the bonnet whilst bouncing the front of the car. Same applies, your feeling for a knock or movement under your finger.
Also, before buying any replacement parts, just make sure everything is tight, it could just be something worked itself loose due to poor fitment.
Hope this helps and good luck finding the issue.

Got it sorted.

Turns out most of the strut was fooked.

Top mount was was knackered, was able to lift it up and down. Removed the top nut and the bearing and spring cup was pretty much welded to the top of the shockie, had to smash it off, which then easily put major holes in the spring cup. Then to finish it off the shockie had been leaking, no return compression.

Torero on here was going to sort my out with a good full strut, but then i got a bit hassle from the local council and had to get the car off the jack quick so a 100 mile round trip to the breakers saw me with 2 good full struts for £40. All fitted up and sweet as.

Only had the car 3 days and 2 of them its been in bits. :(

Right so been for a proper test drive and there is still a faint knock on uneven roads and speed bumps.

Now when the car was sitting parked up with the strut off etc, the hub part was hanging loose.

Now the weight of it has split the track road end and the grease has came out and it feels like there is no resistance in it. Normally these joints are pretty tight if im right.

It was fine before, but aot of pulling etc to get the strut out has loosened it off and now you can twist it easily.

I don't think ive ever had worn TRE's give off a knock, but is it a possibility this is the cause of the slight knock now??

On another note, damn, i do love the way MR2's drive.

Yeah possibly, but as in my first post, do the tests. Idealy you want another person giving the wheel a good tug whilst you underneath looking and feeling the joints with your hand. Also check your anti roll bar mounting points. Might be worth turning your attention to the rears also as it can be miss leading sometimes where the noise is from.
Enjoy your 2!

If that boot has split on the track rod end, its only a matter of time before it wears out and does knock. Advise do it sooner than later.

That's it sorted this time.

Knock was coming from drivers side. Also noticed on full lock it was giving a clunk, and sometime's felt like it was pulling to the left.

Removed strut and was able to lift the top mount off with the bolt still on and all the ball bearings were sitting on top of the spring cup.

Thank fook i got both struts from the breakers or it would have been another 100 mile round trip.

The top mount on the new strut looked new, but was stiff to turn. Some silicon lube spray and a good work in and now it spins freely.
